A cruel blaze of red-orange flames clawed its way into the gaping maw that was the midnight sky.
My eyes were drawn to it immediately as they opened. My first initial thoughts were about why my room didn't have a ceiling... until I realized that the ceiling was actually scorched black, just like a midnight sky.
I remembered letting out a terrified shriek, stumbling out of my bed, and running out of my room, barefoot.
I ran into the hallway, but it was unfamiliar and choked with gray clouds of smoke.
"Mom! Dad! Ahhh!"
A column of flames burst upward, splintering the floorboards next to me. I leapt out of the way, and I continued to run.
An eerie silence, only broken by the vocalized roars of fire and the hollow snapping and crackling of embers, filled the house with terror.
I screamed until I skidded to a halt in front of my parents' bedroom.
A tall pillar of fire blocked the entrance.
