The following morning as i packed up the few meager things Taylen and i had acquired an angry Kizan rushed into my hut panting heavily, a deep scowl of fury on his face

"Why thanks so much for knocking Ki i appreciate it" i sassed exasperatedly

I already knew why he had come and why he was angry. He was upset i was leaving, he wanted me to stay. but my mind was already made up, there would be no changing it. All that was left to do was say goodbye.

"Why are you leaving Ayla?"

"Is it not obvious ki? I am not welcomed here."

He growled loudly

"That is not true i want you here."

I snorted

"So i can watch you and your wife and pretend we never were together. no, id rather not"

Another growl  sounded as he stepped closer, crowding me

"I am bound to her in name only. I do not want nor desire her in the manner that you think"

"It doesn't matter Ki. Dragons mate for life. That means she will always be your wife until death and where would that leave me, huh? Your mistress or something equally degrading. I can never be bonded to you or call myself your wife, because you are already taken. I'm sorry but none of that is good enough for me. I deserve more" I explained my voice faltering slightly

He watched me silently. his expression morphing from rage to resignation to sorrow

"I wish things had turned out differently. I wish it was you i had bonded to. I cannot change the past and i agree you do deserve better than what i can provide. However I do hope you know my desire for you will never cease. Wife or no." He declared

I chuckled

"Well that's flattering. Thank you Ki, for everything. I'm sure We will see each other again. You take care of yourself ok"

I hugged him tightly. His hands wrapped around me pulling me closer. I felt him sniff at my hair and then i released him and  walked away.

We sat at the rebuilt dining tables trying to eat one last meal before we left for the human territory. Somehow the impending journey made everyone melancholic or perhaps just nervous

Abruptly a cheerful Alanor plopped down beside me. His voice breaking the silent  tension of  the group.

"So i hear your leaving" he said piling fruit and meat on his plate.

"Yea" i replied simply not interested in talking

Taylen babbled loudly in my lap playing and giggling with my father

"Why? You tired of us dragons?" he joked

I looked at him stoically, unamused

"You know your people hate me"

He waved his hand dismissively "they hate everyone. some even hate themselves. who cares?"

"I do. I don't want my son around hostile people who treat me and him like we are vermin."

He nodded thoughtfully.

Just then Kizan appeared and  sat at another table. I noticed his wife siting farther down, completely ignoring him. His expression was one i had never seen him wear before. He looked downhearted and miserable. I felt a twinge of guilt but quickly snuffed it out. I couldn't worry about Kizan any longer. Our paths together had run its course and if we were meant to reunite fate would see it done. If not then at least we had our memories.
