Chapter 20

The prince begins to awaken, before noticing that he is in an unfamiliar room. The prince takes the bandage off of his head before he hears voices in the other room. The prince looks around the corner to find a dwarf and a badger arguing.

"Nikabrik, he's just a boy," The badger states.

"Trufflehunter, He's a Telemarine, not some lost puppy," Nikabrik retorts. "You said you were going to get rid of him."

"No. I said I'd take care of him," Trufflehunter argues. "We can't kill him now. I just bandaged his head. It would be like murdering a guest."

"How do you think his friends are treating their guest?" Nikabrik asks.

"Trumpkin knew what he was doing. It's not the boy's fault," Trufflehunter answers him before the prince runs into the room, grabbing a fire poker. Nikabrik grabs his sword before they parry for a second.

"Stop. Stop it!" Trufflehunter orders.

"I told you we should have killed him when we had the chance," Nikabrik states.

"You know why we can't," Trufflehunter scolds.

"If we're taking a vote, I'm with him," The Prince says as he nods towards Trufflehunter.

"We can't just let him go. He's seen us," Nikabrik says before hitting the fire poker causing the prince to fall back.

"Enough! Nikabrik or do I have to sit on your head again?" Trufflehunter threatens before turning to the prince. "And you! Look what you made me do. I spent half the morning on that soup."

"What are you?" The Prince asks confused.

"You know it's funny that you would ask that," Trufflehunter states as he walks away. "You would think more people would know a badger when they saw one."

"No, I mean. You're Narnians. You're supposed to be extinct," The prince explains.

"Sorry to disappoint you," Nikabrik says before walking away.

"Here you go, still hot," Trufflehunter says as he sets a bowl of soup on the table.

"Since when did we open a boarding house for Telemarine soldiers?" Nikabrik asks him.

"I'm not a soldier," The Prince says as he stands. "I'm Prince Caspian, the tenth."

"Then what are you doing here?" Nikabrik asks.

"Running away," Caspian answers as he looks down. "My uncle has always wanted my throne. I suppose, I've only lived this long because he didn't have an heir to the throne."

"That changes things," Trufflehunter says as he looks at Nikabrik.

"Yeah. It means we don't have to kill you ourselves," Nikabrik comments.

"You are right," Caspian says before grabbing his things.

"Where are you going?" Trufflehunter asks him.

"My uncle won't stop until I'm dead," Caspian answers.

"You can't leave. You're meant to save us," Trufflehunter argues. "Don't you know what this is?" Trufflehunter holds up the whistle, while the horn sits in front of him.
