chapter 39

She couldn't see anything. It was dark and cold and a weight was crushing her chest. She stood alone in a dark corridor as the light slowly adjusted. It was as if she was in a void and she was the only one there but, as she stood there she realised that she wasn't alone.

A small figure sat on the ground about 10 meters away from her. The brown curls were all too familiar to her and she walked slowly up to the little boy.

"Thomas?" she said placing a hand on his shoulder. Thomas turned around to face her and his eyes shone with tears.

"where are we mum?" he said, his voice breaking on the last word. She looked down at him in shock. His left side was covered in blood and his face was ghost white.

"I... Don't know. What happened to you" she crouched next to him and he crawled into her arms.

"The bad man came to kill you so I fought him off but as I killed the droid, Poe hurt me... Right here" he pointed to his side and placed his cheek against her chest and a tear escaped her eyes. She stroked his back and she felt him instantly relax.

"Are we dead?" he whispered carefully. She placed a kiss on his forehead and shrugged.

"I'm not sure" she said into his hair.

"I'm not sure..."

He sat alone in the room waiting for any sign that Rey or Thomas were alive. He wouldn't accept the fact that they were gone. They were both in a coma and unresponsive to treatment. His heart was heavy and a weight felt like it was on his chest. It had only been an hour after Rey had given birth to their twin daughters but he couldn't help the hurt he was feeling. The twins were being looked after by the nurses while he sat next to her body. Thomas was in the room next door and Ben had just come back from visiting him.

He was staring at the ground with a dead look in his eye when he saw a blue glow flow through the room. He looked up to see a face that he hadn't seen in ages.

"mum?" he whispered.

Leia's force ghost stood in front of Ben. She smiled up at him and grabbed his hand.

"trust in the force Ben" she whispered back. He looked at her with a hurt face.

"But Thomas and Rey...." his voice broke on their names and he couldn't stop the tears. She placed a hand on his cheek.

"I'm afraid you can't do anything about it" she said with a soft smile. His face contorted into a hurt expression as he realised what she meant.

"It is up to them.... If they want to return to their bodies they will" she stood up and took a step backwards.

"Mum..." he said looking up again.
"I'm sorry" a tear slipped down his cheek.

"no Ben, I'm sorry" the blue glow started to fade and Ben cradled his face in his hands.

She knew they weren't dead but she knew that they weren't alive either. She could still feel her force bond even though it was weak.

It was like a light in the dark, hopeful and guiding, but Rey didn't know where she was going. She sat in the void stroking Thomas's back when a light shone from one end of the void. Thomas's head snapped up as he felt the warmth that the light gave out.

"Mum... I want to go to the light" he said to her. Rey felt fear in the pit of her stomach.

"Thomas, I don't think we should. I think we should go that way" she pointed towards the dark and she felt Thomas shy away.

"but that looks scary" he said inching towards the light. She grabbed his hand.

Please don't die.

I can't live without you twos.

Please, I love you

Ben's voice filled the air. Thomas looked up at Rey and his lip wavered.

"we have to decide if we want to go back to our bodies or carry on in the after life" Thomas sounded sad and heart broken.

"Thomas, I don't want to make you choose the same side as me but just know that I love you" she crouched down in front of him and hugged his small body.

Thomas...
Rey.
I need you, please come back to me... To us
This time Thomas looked at the dark side of the void.

"it came from there" he said pointing towards the dark. He grabbed Reys hand.

"I'm ready to head home" he said into her shoulder.

"So am i" she said standing up. They both walked away from the light that looked so inviting and the last thing Rey felt was Thomas's little fingers squeezing her hand.

He took his hands away from his face and took a deep breath. Trust in the force. He was going to turn to her body when he felt it. His force bond grew stronger. The beep of the heart rate machine picked up again and he turned to find Rey's eyelashes fluttering open. He raced to her side and took her face in one hand as she stared up into his eyes. She could feel the light again and her eyes filled with tears.

"where's Thomas?"
