Here's five quick tips for getting followers and readers on Wattpad:

1) Give the People What They Want!

Now, we don't mean sell out. Write what you love, not what you think other people love. But we do mean give them something to read!

Release quality content on a regular timetable. Friday posts in the afternoon work the best because we've found that's when most people are on. If you update regularly, people are less likely to get distracted (or overwhelmed) and stop reading. Limit yourself slash push yourself to posting once or twice every week. Post too much and people have a hard time catching up; stop posting and people might wonder if you're still alive. (;

2) Mingle and Make Your Name Known

People can't follow you or read your books if they don't know you exist. So get out in the community! There's a whole orange-and-white world out there that is dying to add an insert-your-username-here to the network.

In all seriousness, one of the best ways to get people to your page is to go read other upcoming authors' works, leave good comments, vote when you really like something, and be friendly. Most Wattpadians are really nice as long as you're nice to them (well, really, that's true about people in general, but... (;).

Awards and competitions are one easy way to do this. Most awards list the participants' names, which is free advertising, especially since other readers often check out their competitors. We've gotten to know a lot of users this way, most of which we interact with regularly. So go find some friends!

3) Don't Let Grammar Trip You Up

We know it sounds silly, but if you keep good grammar in your stories, people notice. Don't just use good grammar in your books, though—your entire presence on Wattpad is somewhat like an advertisement for your stories. Use proper mechanics in your message board, bio, and comments on other people's boards and books.

This doesn't mean you have to be a grammar expert. Just utilizing proper capitalization, basic subject/verb agreement, and complete sentences goes a long way. We can post grammar tips here as requested, but if you're looking for a good way to brush up on the basics, check out jgfairytales' book, "How to Edit Like an Editor." It's one of the best free, online grammar resources we've found.

4) Pose for the Camera

Most people only like people taking pictures of them with their hair brushed and shirt on straight; they care what people think about them and how that picture may impact their image. So, be sure to take the same care with your digital image as you do with your physical image!

Try to be professional but friendly. Make sure that your username, profile header, bio, and book covers look and sound good/nice. You want to be sure that the message you're sending about yourself and your works matches the message that you're trying to. If you find that it's not, there's nothing wrong with up-hauling your profile every now and then. Just be careful with switching up usernames too often. As you go through Wattpad life, you leave a trail of digital-breadcrumbs behind you. When you change your username, some links (like comments) update and lead everyone where they're supposed to go. Some links (like dedications and tags) don't though; the trail goes poof and no one knows how to get to your house anymore. )=

5) Dot Your T's and Cross Your I's. (Umm...)

Briefly edit your chapters before you post. This will help you make sure that you didn't accidentally say something silly, and people will notice that you didn't just write and hit publish. However, most people do recognize that most stories here are first-drafts, so don't stress about making chapters perfect. Serious editing comes after you finish the whole draft.

Bonus Tip) Don't Fret!

Even if you follow all that to the tee, things will probably start slowly, and that's not your fault! It takes time to be noticed, but if you're doing a good job, and you're trying to connect with people, then you will be found. It took us about a year to get our page to a moderate amount of interaction, and the entire time we were posting/writing our first draft of Of Caverns and Casters, we only had two readers (then again, our first draft was pretty bad, haha). Sometimes books seem to never have readers, and the key is to be patient. Just get connected, watch your image and grammar, and—most importantly—stay positive! <3
