The soft, dreary, drizzling rain hissed quietly outside the window. The curtains were drawn and the lights were on, giving the room a warm, golden, cozy feel.
It was eight-thirty pm. Or, as your boyfriend Saguru would put it so succinctly, 20:30:54 pm.
You knocked on the door to the office. A "come in" told you to twist the doorknob and push the door open.
Saguru was sitting at the desk with his briefcase lying against the filing cabinets. Papers were neatly stacked in front of him and he was hunched over a document, highlighting something. He basically treated your house as his second home. In fact, he actually spent more time at your house than at his literal estate. When you asked him about it, he gave you a very straightforward answer.
"Hey, Haku-chan? Why do you spend most of your time at my house? I mean, you have a literal estate."
He tapped the base of his chin with a pen as he thought of an answer.
"That's a simple answer, (y/n). It's because it's quite lonely back at my house. There's nobody expect me, Baaya, and the housekeeping staff. I don't have anybody to talk to, really."
"Busy with work, Haku-chan?" you ask, walking over to his side and taking a look at the document. He had highlighted an entire paragraph in neon yellow and was now underlining specific passages in neon green. He absentmindedly nodded and leaned over the desk, grabbing a bundle of documents bound together with rubber bands.
"Can I trouble you to put this away for me, (y/n)? Just put it somewhere in my briefcase; it doesn't matter where."
You nodded and took the documents, walking over to the filing cabinets and zipping open his briefcase.
As expected from a man like him, all the contents were meticulously organized and neatly sorted. Highlighters and notepads were grouped together by color and organized by length. Papers were stacked from largest to smallest. You shook your head and sighed.
Typical Saguru.
You found an empty space and placed the documents there, patting back a few edges sticking out before zipping the briefcase shut.
"What's that document about?" you ask on your way back. Saguru leaned back and stretched for a bit.
"Evidence against an organized crime syndicate. It's pretty solid so far."
"Organized crime? I thought that was Shinichi's thing?"
Saguru nodded and resumed his work. "It is. But this is a joint collaboration between me and Kudo-kun. He's far better at this than I am."
You leaned over his shoulder to take a peek at the contents but was stopped by a ding coming from his phone. He pulled it toward him, checking the notification.
"Ah, Baaya's here to pick me up. Right on time. 20:45:20 pm."
He got up and grabbed his briefcase, storing the document inside it before walking to the front door. As he slipped his shoes on, he hesitated a moment before walking out.
"Hey, (y/n)...?"
"Yeah?"
"You remember what I told you about those keys, right?"
"Uh-huh."
The keys he was referring to were given to you three years ago, with the instructions to use them in the event of his untimely death. You had refused at first, insisting that they should be placed in the care of his housekeeper, but he refused and had given them to you.
You remembered the conversation that had come with it vividly.
"(Y/n), can I entrust you with something?"
You turned to him. "Depends. What is it you're planning to entrust to me?"
He reached into his pocket and pulled out two keys on a ring.
"I'm giving these to you in the event of my untimely death. After all, I'm sure there's plenty of people out there who hold a grudge against me for sending their relatives or friends off to jail. I've given instructions to Baaya as well, so if and when the time comes, you'll know where to use this."
You stared at the keys that had been dropped into the palm of your hand.
"S-Saguru, I can't accept this. Please, give them to your housekeeper. Something that's this important should be trusted with family."
He shook his head and pressed the keys firmly into your palm.
"Keep them. I trust you, (y/n). You've got a good head on your shoulders. I have faith you'll know what to do if the time comes."
The flashback ended, and you blinked at Saguru.
"Do you still have them?"
You nodded. "They're hanging on the wall in my room, near my bed. I still have them."
He nodded, clearly relieved.
"Excellent. I just wanted to make sure. Anyway, I'll be seeing you tomorrow, (y/n)."
He unlocked the door and swung it open. The gentle hissing of the rain was heard now. Tiny raindrops sprinkled the pavement and danced along the gutters of the road, leaping and bouncing. Through the raindrops falling, you could see the headlights of a car idling in the driveway.
"I love you, (y/n). Goodnight."
He set one foot out the door when you grabbed him by the shirt collar and pulled him back.
"You forgot something, silly."
Before he got the chance to respond, you quickly kissed him on the lips. You felt him freeze in surprise for a nanosecond before leaning in and kissing you back.
Breaking away only when you both needed air, you grinned up at him.
"You forgot the goodnight kiss."
He rolled his eyes and kissed you on the forehead.
"Goodnight and I love you, ma chérie."
You kissed him on the cheek before finally letting him go.
"Goodnight, Haku-chan. I love you too."
You watched him walk down the driveway and climb into the car before closing the door. Through the sheer curtains, you saw the car pull away and speed down the road.
Knowing that he was safe, you locked the door and went upstairs to your room, getting ready for bed.
Ten minutes later and in your pajamas now, you climb underneath the covers and flick the lights off. The room was pitch-black and dead silent save for the quiet hum of your humidifier in the corner. You yawned, sleepy for no apparent reason. Within fifteen minutes, you were out and sleeping like a log.
I can't wait to see Haku-chan again tomorrow.
Oh, how naive and foolish you were.

We'll see how it turns out!
