~I'm Fine~
My throat constricted, keeping me silent. Bile bubbled up in my throat as the realization I'd touched someone's rotting hand hit me like a truck. Eric's shout broke me out of my trance.
"Run! Run!" He took off sprinting the rest of us following on his heels. Even Coco had picked up on the atmosphere.
"Was that a hand?!" Tobi panted as we sprinted towards a gap in the trees. I held my hand up in front of my face and gagged.
"I touched it-I touched it!" I shivered trying to keep in pace with the rest of the boys.
"So did I!" David groaned beside me.
"Wait!" Felix gasped behind me. He was lagging slightly behind the rest of us. I slowed down staying in pace with him. He smiled despite the situation. I reached down and grabbed Felix's hand. No way I was letting him lag behind after finding a fucking hand in the forest.
Finally, the empty street was ahead of us, the boy's heavy footsteps on the concrete echoed into the silent night. "What a nightmare..." Eric mumbled kneeling over himself.
"I would have never expected to find that." Cody rolled his bottom lip between his teeth. David bobbed his head in agreement. Felix and I stepped onto the road slightly behind them. His arm was slung dependently over my shoulder and he clung onto my side for dear life. I gritted my teeth trying to ignore the fact he was like twenty pounds heavier than me.
"At least we know who would die first in a zombie apocalypse." Eric joked as Felix and I reached the rest of them. Even though Felix was gasping for breath and struggling to stand up straight he still managed to mumble a 'go fuck yourself'
"And we know who's the chicken that ran away first." Tobi chuckled, pulling out his phone. I slipped Felix's arm off my shoulder and patted his back.
"You okay?" He nodded, still taking shallow breaths. I kept my hand resting on his back just in case.
"Yeah. That chicken happens to be the same person that acted so brave..." Cody muttered playing dumb. Eric scoffed and crossed his arms across his chest defensively.
"It's called survival instinct."
"Isn't it fight or flight?" I chimed in.
"Hang on." Tobi motioned for us to be quiet. " I'm calling my mom."
"What?!" Eric reached for Tobi's phone. "Don't even think about it!"
"Why not? This is serious!"
"Okay fine. It's a random hand we know nothing about, but if you call your mom we're all screwed and we won't be able to continue with the investigation!" I scrunch my nose at Eric's final comment. Continue the investigation? We're all just kids and we just found a rotting hand in a forest. I think it's about time we let the professionals deal with it. "Do you want your mom to ground you?" Eric pleaded to try to convince Tobi just to save his ass.
Tobi pushed away Eric's hand, turning to face him. "This isn't a game Eric! Someone died and that hand could've belonged to some other victim." He jammed his finger into Eric's chest. "I might get grounded but I think I'm doing the right thing." Eric audibly sighed as Tobi dialed his mom. "Don't worry I'll cover you." He let out a sigh of relief.
"Yeah...I don't feel like getting grounded." David chuckled.
"Please excuse me," Felix muttered swaying on his feet. He dropped down to his knees. "I'm just gonna die for a bit." He slumped over onto the concrete. I jumped back in surprise immediately crouching down next to him.
"You said you were fine." I tousled his hair gently. He rolled over onto his back and flung an arm over his eyes.
"Is he okay?"
"We'll always remember you, my friend." Eric clapped his hands together and bowed.
David rubbed the back of his head as worried as I was. "Okay..."
"Are you sure your-" Felix cut me off.
"I'm fine."
"But..." I mumbled.
"But nothing." Felix finished my doubt. "I just got dizzy." I placed a hand on his arm prying it off his eyes. His eyebrows furrowed in annoyance. I forced my lips into a tight smile trying to hide my worry. If he said he was fine then I'd try to believe him.
"We'd better go home." David stood up and placed a hand on my head.
"I'm fine." Felix breathed.
"We'll visit your grave from time to time." Eric shook his head.
"Shut up." Felix snapped at him. "I just need some time to relax." Felix pushed his damp bangs away from his forehead and gazed up at me. I bit my nail nervously.
"We should go and let the police handle this."
"Are you serious!" Eric shouted. I jumped surprised by his outburst. Felix sat up narrowing his eyes at Eric. "You're thinking like the rest of them!"
"You've gotta be kidding me!" Felix backed me up.
"Eric. Stop insisting!" Cody balled his fists.
Eric shrugged in response to Cody. "Am I the only one who thinks we could have found something cool?" That was all it took Cody was angry. He narrowed his emerald eyes and took a threatening step towards Eric.
"At what cost? Dying? Someone was following us!"
"But that could have been your imagination."
Cody turned towards me. "But (Y/N) said she-" Eric turned towards David completely ignoring Cody's shouts.
"I'm sure you want to solve the mystery. Right, David?" David bit his lip and stuttered.
"I do! But Cody said someone was watching us...it could have been the murderer." I glanced down at Felix who met my eyes with a frown. I couldn't tell what was going through his mind.
"He doesn't know for sure!"
"But (Y/N) saw-"
"We can't be good investigators if we get scared so easily! We have to find out the truth!"
David raised his fists, his friendship bracelet jingling from the sudden movement. "Yes! I want to be a good investigator!" Let's just say David is easy to convince. "But I don't want to get murdered."
"Oh come on David." Eric chuckled. "You won't get anywhere if you're a coward." David froze at the insult, everyone fell silent. I furrowed my brows, anger bubbling up in me.
"Eric! Shut up!" To my surprise, Felix had shouted the same thing as me. Eric pouted. Coco whined and took a seat next to Felix on the concrete.
"If you wanna go so badly, just go by yourself," Felix demanded wanting to prove his point.
"By myself?" Eric shuddered glancing at the dark woods behind him. At this hour it was pitch black.
"Yeah. By yourself." Felix was dead set on proving his point but I knew deep down he was hoping Eric wouldn't go alone.
"I didn't realize it got so dark." Eric faltered. "I'll go another day."
"What a shame." Felix drew out his words and let out a long fake sigh. Footsteps behind us made us all turn. We sure were on edge. Tobi approached us, his shoulders sagging.
"What did your mom say?" David was the first to ask.
"Well except for the fact she almost killed me for ignoring what she told me she said that we shouldn't touch anything else and that she'll come to get the hand." The rest of us remained silent. Tobi sighed. "Don't worry she's not gonna call your mom's." Tobi finished referring to David, Cody, and Eric. They all sighed in relief. I peered down at Felix curious to his reaction. He and I were used to the usual feeling of emptiness regarding the word mother. Everyone knew my situation was cut and dry while Felix's was a lot more complicated. "She told us to go home and to not go back into the forest until all of this is solved. And yeah, she grounded me."
"Sorry, Tobi." I sighed.
Cody shook his head. "Told you."
