Chapter 38

Ariana

Sara

"Alright, so, I think we should start, just basic, why don't you write me the hiragana and katakana tables on a piece of paper. So, I can see which ones your struggling with and can help," I said, wanting to start right away so it could end as soon as it finished.

It completely missed Sara as she was engrossed in her phone. She was smiling and I couldn't help but notice the devilish grin on her face. For the life of me I couldn't help but want to know why.

"Sara, I've taken time out of my day to help you, so I hope you could have the courtesy to put your phone away," I gave a slight snap. I didn't like to be angry, but she was edging it out of me.

"Sorry, sorry, didn't mean to offend you or anything," she set her phone down out of the way and grabbed one of the pieces of paper and the pens. Slowly like a turtle she began absentmindedly writing down the characters that she could remember, skipping over the ones she didn't remember.

Sitting down in my spot I took a long sip of coffee, wishing that there was something stronger in it to support me through the next hour. I even wanted to ask Alec to come home early to help diffuse the situation if she wanted to stay longer than the hour, using an excuse as 'get you out of here before my boyfriend arrives home.'

"Your boyfriend must be rich, it would be crazy affording a place like this," Sara commented and I did my best to ignore her comment. I didn't live here for free after all. I paid what I was assuming was half, as I told him I would settle for no less.

"Are you almost finished?" I asked, clearly noticing she was nowhere near finished. She looked at me with a frown on her face and then an innocent smile.

"No... but I really can't remember anymore, it's just so hard to remember. I don't know how you do it." I was baffled at the fact that she had written less than half the characters. She had been in the class for well over two months, there should be no reason why she couldn't remember more, I knew learning a new language was difficult, but she should have at least been able to remember more.

"Just, try to think of some more, even if you think they are wrong, then we'll go over them."

Internally groaning I stood up to retrieve more coffee, while I was pouring it in my cup, I heard her speak up again.

"So, what's your boyfriend like."

I nearly spilled the coffee I was pouring when I heard that. It wasn't any of her business. Why did she want to know? "Maybe I'll tell you if you keep working," I said, shaking my head. Why would I answer it?

The next half hour went by painfully. She kept asking questions pertaining to Alec, and me living here. I had finally had enough of her questions.

"Do you even want to learn Japanese?" I blurted. "Because you sure as hell don't seem to care about it right now, even though I have taken time out of my day to do so."

She was caught off guard, clearly taken aback that I had blown up. But he reaction afterwards was what lit a fire underneath me.

Sara rolled her eyes. She puckered her lips a bit and her eyes narrowed at me.

"Now that seems like a really bad word for a little girl to use, wouldn't Daddy spank you for using such language?"

My face felt heated and red when she said those words. How in the world did she know? Just who was she.

"I have no idea what you're talking about," I dismissed.

Scoffing she replied, "oh I think you do. And seriously, I still can't believe you don't know who I am. I would have thought Alec would have at least mentioned me even once. I mean, he and I had a lot of history together, and I've been texting him recently." She folded her arms onto the table and looked at me with a serious face and I began piecing everything together.
