Chapter: Its Not Carrolee

I walked very calmly toward my hotel. I had already booked a room online. My little rolling suitcase made a loud noise as I rolled it across the cobblestone sidewalk. The weird part of the little scene was I was the only person within sight. No one else was here in Beijing now? It may be midnight, but even then there should be someone around. I started walking in the middle of the street so the annoying clattering noise my suitcase made would quit. Ah, much better.

"Savanna." said Carrolee.

I froze. The dragon had warned me of something like this trying to trick me.

Carrolee's voive sounded sweet in my ear. "Turn on a flashlight and look at me; Savanna."

I gulped. I loved my sister. Even though I was trying to kill her. What a small request of her, and I couldn't even fill it?

The dragon warned me though. Chinese water dragons are known to be extremely wise. This one knew that this sort of situation might happen. He didn't even like me clearly, and he wants me to run from this. I should run! Yet..., Carrolee's voice, I haven't heard it in weeks. It reminds me of what is good in my relatively sucky life. It's sound is sweeter than the smell of fresh blood to a vampire, human flesh to a werewolf, or the mesmerizing light of the fire to a moth.

A moth to the flame. That's what I am. Must...resist...before the smoke overtakes and kills me!

"I love you, Savanna." said Carrolee.

My eyes watered and I sank down on my knees onto the grimy street as I struggled with myself. "I love you too, Carrolee."

"Turn on a light, Savanna." pleaded Carrolee.

My fist clenched tightly closed. I opened it and made a tiny light orb in that hand. I turned around slowly.

This creature was of the dark. Lightwielders and shadowhiders can tell things like that. It was much bigger than me, and had a praying mantis abdomen and thorax. Out of the abdomen came four praying mantis legs. But out of the thorax, there were two human-looking arms that went along with mantis pincers. The head of the creature was human as well, with human eyes, nose, hair, etc. Around the creature's head and neck were octopus-like tentacles. The creature's overall body color was pitch black. Only the face was not black, it was a very white color. Those eyes on the face had no visible irises because the entire eyeball was black.

I quickly threw myself into the Darke Darkness dimension to escape from it. My two powers are light-control and opening/traveling into the Darke Darkness dimension. Its a sort of miniature dimension that's within our dimension. Normally in the Darke Darkness mode, nothing can see or touch me. The creature laughed and grabbed me with the tentacles. I had forgotten this was a creature related to the dark, of course it was probably from the Darke Darkness dimension!

It's REAL voice was raspy. "What luck that the human I find is a Darke Darkness power possessor! I will have to search no more to end my suffering!"

"What thing are you?!" I screamed as I tried to struggle out of it's sticky hold on me.

It hissed, "I am a Darke Darkness Mantis. And you are mine NOW!!!"

I'm not quite sure how to describe what happened next. What I do know is there was the sharp feeling of intense pain beyond imagination. Then, there was inky blackness.
