As the little boy nestled into my arms, I felt a pang of warmth mixed with the ache of recent loss. Despite my own grief, I focused on comforting him, offering the toffee I had in my bag. Though he didn't take it, his tears stopped, and his gaze locked onto mine with a mix of curiosity and vulnerability.
"He rarely gets close to strangers," Henry remarked, his surprise evident in his voice.
I held the child close, feeling a strange connection that brought both comfort and sadness. "There, there, little one. Do you want some toffees?" I asked, trying to distract him from his tears.
But it wasn't the toffees that seemed to calm him. It was the simple act of being held, of feeling safe in my arms. As he stared at me with his misty brown eyes, I couldn't help but feel a glimmer of hope amidst my own sorrow.
"He stopped crying, wow," Henry exclaimed, breaking the silence. "That's some magic right there."
I smiled weakly, grateful for the distraction from my own thoughts. "I think he just needed a little comfort," I replied, my voice barely above a whisper.
As Henry reached out to take the child from my arms, Logan held on tight, his fingers clutching onto my dress as if afraid to let go. "What's wrong, Logan? Don't you want to go to mommy anymore?" I asked gently, rocking him back and forth.
Logan looked up at me with a grin that lit up his face, and for a moment, I forgot about everything else. Despite the pain of recent loss, his smile brought a glimmer of joy that I hadn't felt in a long time.
"Can he stay in your arms for a while so I can get changed and take him to his mother, please?" Henry asked, breaking the momentary connection between Logan and me.
I nodded, smiling softly. "Of course, take your time."
As Henry left to get changed, I held Logan close, feeling a sense of contentment wash over me. I was grateful for the chance to hold him a little longer, even if it meant just for a few moments.
"You're going to be a very good mother, Serwaa," Henry's words caught me off guard, and for a moment, I was speechless. His compliment warmed my heart, even though I doubted my own abilities as a mother.
But as I looked down at Logan, nestled in my arms, I realized that maybe I had a chance to be better, to be the mother I never thought I could be. And in that moment, surrounded by warmth and love, nothing else mattered.
