"Get in!" Layla's voice rang out from inside her car as she rolled down the window. She couldn't contain her laughter at how funny and frustrated I looked in my bedsheet costume. "You look silly," she guffawed.

I wiped the tears from my face with the back of my hand and stopped in my tracks. My feet were starting to ache from running so fast.

Despite my exhaustion, I hesitated to jump into Layla's car. I knew she would make a big deal out of it and scold me for rejecting Henry's proposal. I just wasn't in the mood for that.

"Serwaa, it looks like it's going to rain. Get in," Richard insisted, poking his head out the door. It was his way of reminding me that he was still waiting for an explanation, his expression a mix of confusion and curiosity.

Richard didn't seem angry about what happened, but regret was written all over my face. I just prayed he wouldn't think badly of me.

Layla parked the car properly and stepped out with a stern smile.

I stood there, feeling like I'd been told to wait. With her hand on her hip and a strange grin, she looked like she was about to give me a lecture.

"Listen Layla, I already know what you're going to say, and..."

Before I could finish, she pulled me into her arms and embraced me. "I'm so proud of you," she muttered, and tears welled up in my eyes.

It was the most comforting hug I'd had in a while. It felt warm and relaxing.

"I don't... get... it. Aren't you supposed to be mad at me? Shouldn't... you be yelling about... how I just... made the greatest mistake of my life?" I stammered, struggling to control my tears.

Layla's eyes softened as she looked at me, understanding evident in her expression. "No, Serwaa, I think you did the right thing. You can't marry someone if your heart clearly belongs to another man. Yes, I want what's best for you, but ultimately, it's your happiness that matters most."

Her words brought a sense of relief, but tears still welled up in my eyes. I held onto her tightly, grateful for her understanding.

"Richard, I'm so sorry," I said, turning to face him. "I'd like to explain things to you. I know everything seems confusing right now, but not now. First, we need to find Kofi. I have a feeling he's in trouble."

Richard nodded, his expression serious. "Of course, Serwaa. Let's focus on finding Kofi first."

I smiled gratefully at him, feeling a weight lift off my shoulders. With Layla and Richard by my side, I knew everything would be okay.
