Chapter 14

I woke up in my room in gran’s house with a small blanket over me. I got up off the bed and the curtains were closed, I searched for my phone and it was on the pedestal, I checked the time and it was past 8pm and I had a dozen missed calls from Ahlume. I sighed and called him. he answered after a while
“thank God.” He sighed with relief “Sweet Lips”
“hey babe. So many missed calls?” I asked trying to recall what had happened
“you scared me.” he said panicking “Are you ok? I came to see you but your mom said you were sleeping”
I tittered “I just woke up. calm down I’m ok”
“what happened?” he asked sounding really confused
I shrugged my shoulders “I don’t know. one minute I’m ok and the next minute I just felt weak and dizzy”
He sighed “Anelisa I’m sorry
I shook my head “it’s not your fault”
“it is. My grandmother cast a spell around our house and that spell affected you badly when we walked in with her there” I swallowed hard processing what he had just said “you being with me only puts your life on danger. It puts a target on your back” he said with hurt. I didn’t respond, he sighed “can I see you tomorrow?”
“as long as we won’t be anywhere near your grandmother” I said trying to lighten up the mood
He snickered “of cause. We’ll go wherever you want us to go”
I chuckled “let’s try that new restaurant in Musgrave”
“anywhere you want to go babe.” He said sounding a little better “I have to go; I’ll call you when I get back ok”
“going to that party?” I enquired
“might as well. I need a distraction and I know you won’t want to come chill with me in the car outside your crib” he said with a bit of disappointment
He knew me too damn well for my liking
I smiled “you know me all too well. Go have fun ok”
“I’ll try. I love you ok” he said
I smiled “I love you too Ace”
He gasped “did you just say you love me?” I chuckled “Anelisa Sweetlips Sibeko Marhadebe just told me she loves me”
I could hear the excitement in his voice
I rolled my eyes “whatever Ace”
“allow me to enjoy this moment. Now all that’s left is you to say it in person” he said with nothing but joy in his voice
I chuckled “Ahlume!” I yelled
“hayi! Let me have this. you just told me you love me. I’m going to mark this day on my calendar!”

I laughed at him “go out with your brother”
“can I come pass by for a kiss?”
“NO!” I scolded “bye Ahlume Adams”
He let out a lazy chuckle “tell me you love me again”
I rolled my eyes “I love you Ahlume Ace Adams. I am madly in love with you”
“ok bye Sweet lips. I love you more by the way” he said before ending the call
I put my phone in my pocket laughing.
This guy sure knew what to do to make me laugh or smile. Seeing that I might just die soon I might as well tell him how I feel. It’s pointless to keep it from him, I rather die with him knowing just how I felt about him.
I made my way to the lounge and I could hear laughter. I stood by the door frame and mom and granny were chatting like good old friends. I walked in and gran smiled
“you’re awake” she said patting next to her
“well you two are cosy” I said looking at mom who was sitting on the side of gran
They were going through an old photo album together and laughing at the pictures
“it was long overdue honey” mom said paging through the album
“who is this?” I asked pointing at a man in the picture
“that is my father” mom responded
“we should put this away now” granny said sounding really tense
“but mo”
“put it in its place Neliswa, I’m going to sleep” she said that getting up
Mom and I looked at each other shook by granny’s reaction. She walked out of the lounge leaving me with mom
“and then?” I asked
Mom shrugged her shoulders “she never talks about him”
I raised and eyebrow. It was really shocking how she never spoke of her husband or mention him. it was my first time even seeing his picture considering that there were none around the house and my grandmother was not someone you could easily get through to
“hungry?” mom asked
I nodded “yeah I’m famished”
She smiled and pulled me by my hand. We walked to the kitchen and she warmed my plate for me while I sat on one of the chairs in the kitchen
“so tell me what happened?” she asked
I shrugged “I honestly don’t know mom. I was walking inside the house with Ahlume when I started feeling dizzy and really hot like I was about to faint and next thing I woke up here”
She nodded “Ahlume’s grandmother is a very powerful witch Lisa and seemingly her magic or whatever spell she cast around that house is tied to her making it stronger when she is in the house which in turn makes you or me very weak in that house so hence you collapsed” I looked at her confused “Ahlume’s grandmother is up to something and whatever she is up to involves you, she wants to use you for whatever mischief she has going on”
I placed my hand on my heart in shock “but I didn’t do anything to her” I argued
She shrugged “you didn’t have to, you crime was to be born looking like another person from around the world”
She took out my food and handed it to me. I smiled at her
“what?” she returned a doubtful smile
“you and dad” she rolled her eyes smiling “its ok if you two are back together mom. I’m happy for you even”
She smiled shyly. She was really beautiful no doubt “it just happened”
I smiled “as long as you happy mom”
“Earlier on we were still talking” She sat on the chair opposite me and put my hands on the counter
“oh yeah. Mom why cant I end things with Ahlume?”
Her expression changed to concern same time, I suddenly was not sure whether to continue or not
She shrugged her shoulders “I wish I knew baby because you being with him puts your life in danger”
“its his grandmother though that puts my life in danger” I defended
She kept quiet, I couldn’t read her expression. I didn’t even know what to say anymore
“stay away from that wolf Anelisa”
I turned around and dad was walking into the kitchen.
What was he even doing here?
“is it you or your doppelganger that’s supposed to carry this child? I mean the guy loves you and he would never let any harm come your way. You the only one that can tame him baby” mom said ignoring dad’s presence
He shook his head no “Nonsense! You are cutting all ties with that boy. No child of mine is not going to be with such a monster” he said sounding really angry
“da.”
“NO ANELISA!” he yelled and we both looked at him. he turned to mom “I can’t believe you entertaining this Neliswa”
“Travis please just listen.” Mom walked up to him but dad shook his head “Look I had visions and dreams of Lisa being chosen by fate for Ahlume in order to tame him. she’s the only one that can keep him in check and make sure that his true nature stays buried”
He shook his head fuming “which part of our daughter staying away from him did you not get?”
Mom shot him a look “you say it like you yourself are not a monster”
Dad raised an eyebrow “I’m a monster because you made me one Neliswa!”
“so I was supposed to just let you die huh?” mom asked moving back
I just got up and left them going back and forth. I sat on the couch and started digging in, the food was so nice. After a while mom walked in looking defeated
“Can we talk?” I nodded and she sat on the couch next to me “Anelisa fate chose you. Fate chose you to tame the wolf in Ahlume”
“and where would that leave Monalisa?” I asked looking at her
She shrugged her shoulders “both doppelgangers can’t exist, it’s an imbalance to nature and as long as she exists then you will always be a target”
I frowned “so what? You kill her?”
“no. look, a curse was placed on her baby and as long as that curse on her is not lifted then she will be the death of herself” she said playing with my hand
I furrowed my eyebrows really confused “she’s going to kill herself?”
“no. I don’t how she’s going to die but she’s going to die one way or the other and there’s nothing any of us can do to save her, she will be the cause of her own death” she said looking down
“you’re a witch. Can’t you remove the curse off of her?” I asked with furrowed eyebrows
She sighed “I was not born a witch Lisa, I learnt how to do magic unlike Ahlume’s grandmother and remember a curse was placed on me.” she paused and I nodded “Until the curse that was placed on me is removed then no I can’t. I’m not strong enough to break a curse especially the one that was placed on her”
God why can’t both of us live?
