Chapter 2

A couple hours later we fly past Itchy Armpit island and make our way farther East.

We pass the the edge of the map and continue forward.

Finally we made it past this island. I haven't been to Itchy Armpit since the first time I discovered it which was.. Hmm, maybe two years ago? Why in the world did I let Toothless name it 'Itchy Armpit?'
I mean, it's a beautiful island.
And I named it Itchy Armpit.
Rephrase, Toothless named it Itchy Armpit, and I agreed.

"Remind me to not let you name the next island Toothless. No offense, but yikes bud."

He growls back and spins us around. I just laugh and play along, holding on as tight as I can, until he decides to give up and fly straight again.

"Hey you know that's not gonna work on me. We spin every time we go flying bud."

He shakes his head and let's out a few grunts before giving me the silent treatment.

"Hey now come on Toothless don't be like that you big baby boo." I rub his head forcefully and laugh as he tries to shake me off.

Suddenly Toothless's head stiffens and his ears stick up alert.

"What is it." I look up and grimace.
A wall of intimidating jet-black clouds are straight in front of us.

"Oh... um," I turn my head to find any open sky and realize we've been surrounded by these thick clouds.

"Thor!"

I slam my hands down on the saddle. I can't believe I wasn't paying attention to where we were going! I was supposed to fly around it. I was aiming to avoid it, and somehow we ended up here.

"Wow fantastic Hiccup. You sent us straight into the storm, idiot," I talk out loud.

Suddenly the temperature drops dramatically and an icy wind attacks us from all directions. Toothless starts to shake as the wind messes with his wings.

"Easy Toothless."

I flinch as we enter into the clouds ahead and the darkness surrounds us. It's almost impossible to see. The clouds are extremely dense and dark. We are flying blind. The wind is so loud I can't here myself shouting.

"Toothless we need to turn back!" I shout through the wind.

He shakes his head to acknowledge me and starts to turn around but the wind is making it hard for him to control which way we fly. I look at my compass and find that the arrow won't steady. It's like we are spinning around in circles. Great.

"So much for going around the storm," I mumble. "We need to land somewhere!" I shout. If we can even find land. I can barley see the tips of Toothless's wings.

Something flashes to my left and I look up. After a few seconds I don't see anything so I look away. Toothless is struggling to keep his wings steady. I'm trying to stay on. The wind is getting stronger and I swear the clouds are getting even darker. Astrid's gonna kill me when I tell her about this.
No, wait.
If I tell her about this. Yeah, if.

Bang!

A bright flash strikes right next to Toothless's right wing.

"Great! My favorite part!" I sarcastically scream into the wind as I recognize the lightning. It strikes closer to Toothless's tail. This is a disaster waiting to happen. We are flying blind, we have no idea where we are, we can't find land, and we are being attacked by lightning. What a wonderful day. But Toothless and I have handled worse and survived, so we'll be fine. Right?

Then just like that, everything changes.

It happens so fast my eyes don't have the time to process what I see.

I turn to look back as a lightning bolt hits Toothless's tail and the fabric erupts in flames. Then another bolt hits near the same spot, travels up through his tail, and explodes out the tip of his left wing. The explosion rips his wing apart. I hear an unbearable painful screech and realize it's coming from Toothless.

Then we're falling.

"Toothless!" I scream.

I'm terrified. We can't fly. We can only fall into the unknown below. I hope there's land, but then I hope it's water. I don't know what to think. I just know that I'm not going to make it back before dark.

There's a flash and for a split second I see what's below us.

Then everything goes dark.
