In 10th Century AD, the Indian subcontinent was divided into several kingdoms. The western Indian state of Gujrat was ruled by the Gurjara-Pratihara Dynasty. Adjoining to Pratihara kingdom was the mighty Chalukaya Kingdom.
It spanned from South to central India. Refer to the map.

The kingdoms had a feudal structure. Several vassal states and provinces swore allegiance to the bigger dynasties. Kings of vassal states were referred to as Raja and the rulers of Empires which ruled over several smaller states were called Maharaj which meant King of King.

Maharaj Vallabdev was the King of Pratihar Kingdom and Maharaj Bhojraj was king of the Chalukya Empire.
When this story started both kingdoms were at loggerheads.
