God Laughs

We're standing (well, sitting) on the beach
back home.

I can hear
the peaceful crash
of the tide
against sand,

the raucous call
of seagulls -

triumph!

I can see
clouds
cracking up...

& above –

a purpling
sky,

like a healing
bruise

& all around Pea & I:

Ava.

Avalon Gates
Avalon Gates?
Avalon Gates!

I can feel her fingerprints
all over the place:

the sky
the sea
Pea

& me

I can smell her
on the air

her hair,
her laugh.

Pea & I are walking (well, rolling) along the beach. Her feet kick up sand

& her eyes
crinkle as she
smiles.

"So." she says

"So." I say,
while I watch
the far horizon

"What?" Pea asks, the wind blowing through her neon hair.

"I dunno.

(I do know)

just wondering what
it all means,
Pea."

"Why are you always looking for an answer, Mattie? Why don't we just –

live in the question?"

so we do.
