"(Y/N), I have to leave," my mom stood in the doorway, holding her suitcase, "You can stay in this house. Mitsuki knows to come and see what you're doing from time to time."

I frowned, "When will you be back?"

         "I don't know."

"But," I crossed my arms, "But after dad died I thought that meant you would stick around more. Besides today-"

"The fact that your father is dead means I have to take on more work for myself. Someone has to provide for this family."

         "I know! But today is-"

         "I have to go."

         "Wait-"

My mother slammed the front door. I watched through the window as she loaded her luggage into the trunk of a taxi, before getting in herself. The taxi drove away from my house until it was just a dot in the distance.

I sighed and started to walk up to my bedroom.

"Of all days," I muttered to myself, "She had to pick today. Of all days she had to pick my-"

I opened the door to my room to see Touya sitting on my bed, beaming. A party hat sat on top of his unruly red hair and he held a small, wrapped, box in his hands. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a cake sitting on my desk. Touya placed the box in his hands on my bed and threw his hands in the air, "Happy Birthday, Ice Princess!"

I felt the frown on my face slowly morph into a smile, "T-Touya! You remembered?"

"Why wouldn't I remember your birthday? That would make me a terrible best friend," he motioned for me to sit down next to him on my bed, which I did.

I poked the party hat on Touya's head, "How did you even get in, stalker?"

"You left your window unlocked," Touya shrugged, "Anyway. Your mom just left, right? What'd she get you for your birthday?"

       I looked down.

Touya blinked, "She... she got you something, right?"

I looked at Touya and smiled, "She has work to do."

"But," Touya gritted his teeth, "She should still-"

        "It's fine, Touya."

Touya frowned for a split second before picking up the wrapped box and handing it to me, "Anyway, it doesn't matter what your mom didn't get you. I wouldn't be caught dead not giving you a present on your birthday."

I took the box from Touya, "You didn't have t-"

"Oh yes I did," Touya cut me off, "Go on. Open it."

I rolled my eyes but smiled as I tore off the wrapping paper, revealing a plain black box. I opened the box to reveal a tiny glass sculpture sitting delicately within the box. I picked it up carefully, making sure I didn't break it. The sculpture was of a woman who wore a white dress, which melted into the sea. Her hair also melted into the water. She wore a crown of coral and where her legs should be there was a fish-tail. The whole thing was breathtakingly gorgeous.

"Well?" Touya fiddled with his thumbs, "Do you like it?"

"Touya," I turned my head to him, "It's gorgeous."
