𝐄𝐧𝐣𝐨𝐲!

My eyes darted from Aly to mother.

They were chatting normally.

Mother occasionally glanced at me and nodded.

But overall, they just ignored me.

"So, why are you here?" I asked, wanting to be petty and interrupt their moment.

Aly glared at me.

Mother stared at me, startled, before starting to tear up.

"I-I missed you two... I know what I did was wrong and I should've visited more often-"

"You never visited us at all." I interrupted.

Aly looked down at her feet, the previous joy on her face missing and replaced with apprehension.

Mother shifted.

She fell silent.

"A-and I-I'm sorry for that... I know I could've been a better mum. But being an air hostess isn't the most free job." She sighed.

She walked over to Aly, cradling her in her arms as if she were still a child.

"You've grown so beautifully, darling. A bright and beautiful girl. My bright and beautiful girl." Mother smiled, wiping Aly's tears away gently.

She patted her hand with a loving look in her eyes.

I felt left out.

I know she'll never look at me the same way.

"And Alec, you've grown too..." She added awkwardly after a while.

I snorted.

She certainly wasn't going to say that I had grown beautifully into a bright girl.

"When's my birthday, Amelia?" I asked abruptly, wanting to let out the bitterness in my heart.

I wasn't going to call her mum anytime soon, not after everything.

Aly looked shocked that I called her by her real name.

Amelia fidgeted for a while.

"Erm... You were a pain..." She mumbled to herself, before continuing, "Such a problem child. I was bedridden for weeks when I had you."

"But you had such a charming smile that I wanted to see it any chance I got. It's a shame you weren't ticklish, I'd have tickled you silly." She laughed fondly at the memory.

"September 12th." She answered determinedly.

"And Aly's?" I asked, hating the warmth spreading through my chest.

She wavered.

"Er... March 5th...?" She said uncertainty.

Aly was shocked.

"Y-you don't remember my birthday?"

As much as Aly is the favourite, to forget something like that...

She ran upstairs. (For the second time today).

"Aly!" She cried after her.

"You haven't been away that long at your new job to forget your own daughter's birthday." I said, admittedly snidely.

She shook her head, looking dejected.

"So, what were you really doing coming here? Why did you come all of a sudden? You left last year as soon as you got the job. So why did you come back?" I pressed, wanting answers.

She rubbed her forehead as if she was tired or annoyed.

"Look... This is my house, I can come back when I want." She snapped.

"Yes, but why? Were you fired? What do you want from us?" I questioned, my arms folded.

She looked at me with a much different look that she gave Aly.

I hate how it made my heart shatter just a bit more.

I hate how I care.

I hate her.

N̸o̸ I̸ d̸o̸n̸'t̸.

Amelia took a deep breath, sighing as if she was doing a boring chore.

"I'm here to take Aly to Europe with me."

Third Person POV:

Alec's eyes widened with shock.

He felt like punching the wall.

He felt dizzy.

He felt sick.

He clutched the tea towel on his head.

Amelia glanced at him, her eyes regarding him coldly.

Such a disappointment...

She thought.

He ran up the stairs, needing to be away from her.

He slowly opened the door to Aly's room.

She was sobbing softly into her pillow.

She was clutching her lucky charm to her chest in a tight fist.

A gift from their dad to her.

The only thing that resembled his taste in the entire house.

"Why, why, why, do you always have to ruin things, Alec?!" Aly sobbed out.

"We were so happy before mum left! What changed?!" She screamed.

Alec stayed silent.

When she was like this he learnt to let her cry and scream.

Aly felt like throwing her desk at him.

Everything was perfect...

Until you found out about us being in debt.

You changed so much...

"I want my old brother back..." Aly cried.

Alec's eyes widened.

"What?" He said sharply.

"You changed so much when you found out we were in debt! PLEASE COME BACK ALEC! I'M BEGGING YOU!" She pleaded, desperately trying to reach out to him but failing due to the distance.

Alec found himself rushing to her side, rather than dithering in the doorway.

He rocked her in his strong arms.

"I-I'm sorry, Aly..." Is all he could say.

Aly quietly sobbed into his shoulder.

"Please, Alec..." A soft whimper escaped Aly.

Alec broke from hearing her like that.

"Aly..."

Aly just leaned on him, tuning out his words.

"If you can't be the old Alec, then promise me this..."

Alec cupped his hand on her hair, running his fingers through it.

"Promise me that we'll never be apart."

"Promise." They whispered together.
