I closed my eyes and flipped threw my oldest sketchbook that's being held up my duck tape. I landing on character name Shiara Barbara Stewart aka Shay 'The Hunter'. I made this character when I was in six grade (rough estimate) while watching Justice League. I loved the whole romance between Hawkgirl and Green Lantern (John Stewart) and thought what if they had a daughter. They canonally had son. Apparently neither I or producers knew how genetics work.

I knew I wanted to keep the pose because it has to be recognizable as the same character

I knew I wanted to keep the pose because it has to be recognizable as the same character. I first took a picture of the old drawing and traced it on top of the original on Procreate.  I resized the character to more digestible proportions.  I also decided on Shia instead of Shay for a nickname. I also didn't like her middle name or her hero name. I decided she doesn't need a middle name and her hero name is "Earhart" after her favorite pilot. Shia is obsessed with anything involving flight.

As you can see I changed the position of her legs

As you can see I changed the position of her legs. I disliked her right leg over left. It looked unnatural. I wanted to make it look like she was landing. I had gathered my main references prior to starting as one should do. I grouped them and put them on their own layer.

My canvas is 8 X 11 (size of standard printer paper). I showed a friend of mine and he said she looked like Miles Morales as a Disney Character. As you can see I keep changing her hair and I gave her a helmet to hold. Having a hand stretched out for no reason bothered me. I put a lot of thought in the function of things that my characters possess. Her hat could prevent bugs in her eyes then I ran into a problem. Her gorgeous fro would be messed up. So I gave her hair closer to the original drawing.
