As soon as the company car pulled to the front of the entrance, I gave Alex a gentle nudge. Regardless of the battle he had fought with sleep for the majority of this ride, sleep eventually overpowered him. I felt his body gently rested against my side, with his head on my shoulder.

"Alex?" I whispered to him.

He made a sound I was certain I'd never heard a human make before. It sounded like a dying toad.

"Alex?" I spoke again, nudging him just a little harder. His eyes slowly opened up to the world.

"Are we here?" He mumbled, rubbing sleep from his irritated eyes.

"Yep. Come on, love. Let's get you to bed."

Alex was slow to start, but eventually we made it up the steps of the estate towards my home. Before I was able to get the door open, Nathaniel got it unlocked for me. He was in one of his slightly varied ironed vests, with crisp pants suits... except the vest was buttoned incorrectly, and his undereyes were completely sunken.

I had never seen Nathaniel look so terribly rested before.

"Good aft-well I guess morning?" He glanced up at the sky behind us. "You know what sir, good day." He nodded to me. I couldn't help but stare as he fumbled through that greeting.

Was Nathaniel... broken or something?

"Good day, Nathaniel. My apologies for bombarding you last minute with all these changes." I spoke, attempting to guide the still sleepy Alex into my home, with our cases in hand.

"No need to apologize, sir. This is my job." Nathaniel replied, as he quickly took the suitcases from me. I couldn't help but frown at that. Even Nathaniel's words dripping with stress.

"Alex?" I tapped my sleep deprived lover on the shoulder. He glanced back at me. "Why don't you go up to my room and get comfortable. I'll be there in a few, okay?" He gave me a nod, with his eyes still half closed, before making his way down the long corridor.

Both Nathaniel and I watched as he disappeared.

"Let go speak in my office." I told my clearly depleted caretaker.

-

"You should have gone to see your parents first." He said, throwing that whiskey shot back like it was water. I stared at Nathaniel, wide eyed. I'd never seen him like... this before.

"Nathaniel, look at me. Clearly I'm not in any right state of mind to see them. I'm about one more slight inconvenience away from choking someone out. Plus the way my father is set up, he'll just eat up my aggravation and spit it back out at me, then my mother will get involved and it's just- I don't need that right now at what is it, not even eight in the morning yet?" I asked, glancing up at The Godfather clock that was standing in the corner of my study.
