Chapter 8: Alby/Meeting Teresa

While I was taking a nap in the pit, I heard a noise and look up. I see Newt letting me out of the pit. And it is sundown.

"Hey... you doing alright?" he asks me in concern.

"Yeah definitely. I saw what happened with the girl throwing things at you guys and when Gally got hit in the head after being cut off, that made me laugh." I say as I laugh.

Newt laughs as well.

I start to remember when Gally said that Newt had a thing for me but it was probably a rumor. I hesitate to bring this up, but I wanna let it out.

"Um, Newt...?" I say.

"Hmm?" he responds.

"Uh...re-remember when Gally said that...you had a thing for me...at Homestead...?" I ask him awkwardly.

Newt blushes at the memory which I thought was cute.

"Yeah, uh, like I said before don't let him get to you, okay? He was just joking." Newt comes up with an excuse.

"Are you sure? You've been protective of me, we've gotten closer and closer everyday ever since I came here, you've been there for me when I needed you...and...kissing me on the head and cheek...and...I know these are the signs of love. Do you...Do you like me...?" I ask him.

Newt blushed again and tried to think of what to say, but gave up.

"Okay, yes. Yes, I like you.." he says while blushing and looking down in shame.

I blush at him saying that. But I put my hand on his cheek in which he looks right in my eyes, hoping for a response.

"I...I like you, too..." I smile in which Newt smiles back and he puts his hand on my cheek and starts to lean in.

Oh my God, this is it. The second-in-command who I had formed a bond with is about to kiss me. I thought.

He's getting closer and closer and..........

"Hey, Newt! I think we have something that could help Alby!" Thomas says to us as we pull apart fast.

Awww, we were so close. Nice going, Thomas. You just interrupted our moment. I thought.

"All right. Come on." Newt says as we go to the med-jack tent to see Alby. He still in that state like he's asleep and having a nightmare that he can't wake up from.

Newt looks at the syringe.

"We don't know what this stuff is, or why it came up here with you. For all we know, this thing could kill him." Newt says to Thomas and the girl.

"He's already dying. Look. How could this possibly make it any worse? Come on, it's worth a try." Thomas says and points to Alby.

Newt gives up and gives the syringe to Thomas.

"Alright. Do it."

I hold Newt's arm as a sign that I don't wanna look. He wraps an arm around me and I hide my face in his chest so I don't look while Thomas injects the syringe on Alby.

"Okay." Thomas says as he looks at us with determination. As he was about to inject Alby, he wakes up and sees Thomas and all of a sudden he grabs Thomas by the arm and starts attacking him!

"You shouldn't be here. You shouldn't be here!!" Alby growls at Thomas. I get scared at Alby acting like this.

"Watch out!" Newt alarms Thomas and tries to pull Thomas out of Alby's grip.

"Get the syringe!" Thomas tells the girl.

The girl injects Alby's chest with the syringe, in which he calms down.

We are in shock and relief at what just happened.

"Well...that worked." Jeff says.

"Okay, from now on...someone stays here and watches him around the clock." Newt orders while his voice cracked and is still in complete shock at what happened.

Gally walks in.

"Hey. Sundown, Greenie. Time to go." he says.

I forgot that Thomas's punishment was one night in the pit with no food.

The girl and I stay with Alby for a few minutes.

"So we're the only girls here." the girl says trying to understand.

"Yep. I'm Jacqui." I say as I introduce myself.

"I'm Teresa." the girl introduces.

I smile at her as she smiles back.

"The British boy likes you. I could tell." she says.

I chuckle.

"Yeah, that's Newt. He's the second-in-command of this place. He does like me. And I like him. We almost had our first kiss until Thomas interrupted us. But it was an accident he didn't know we were having a moment." I say as I chuckle. Teresa chuckles as well. It actually feels good to have a girl friend to talk to.

*time skip*

I lay down on my hammock and that memory of me and Newt getting this close to having our first kiss keeps playing in my mind. I go to sleep while smiling.
