Chapter 12: Chuck's Death & Rescue

A door opens up and we walk slowly to where it leads to and it reveals a long corridor. We stumble upon a door and a sign that says "EXIT" over it.

"Seriously?" Frypan asks in disbelief. I couldn't help but hold in a laugh when he said that.

Thomas opens the door slowly. We walk in what looks like a lab and the alarm is beeping quietly. We see dead bodies lying around and bleeding.

I look over at a window and see dead bodies covers in white sheets while bleeding. I shiver at the sight of that and feel tears fill up my eyes.

Newt notices how I'm feeling and puts his hands on my shoulders and pulls my head away with one hand since he doesn't want me to look at the disturbing sight.

We walk into a room and me, Newt, and Frypan see something. A hologram picture of the Glade and other parts of the Glade. I put my hand over my mouth in shock.

"So they were watching us. This whole time." Newt says. Tears fill up my eyes at the thought of me and everyone else being stalked by these Creators. Newt wraps an arm around me trying to comfort me.

"It's okay...We won't be watched anymore. Gally's loss. He doesn't even realize he's being watched." Newt whispers to me. I snicker at that.

"Yep, poor Gally." I say sarcastically which Newt smiles in response.

About a minute later, a woman's voice on a monitor jump scares us and our eyes are on her and we listen what she has to say.

"Hello. My name is Dr. Ava Paige. I'm director of operations of the World Catastrophe Killzone Department." the blonde woman says in the video.

WCKED. So she's in charge of who sent us at the maze. I thought with an angry and confused look on my face.

"If you're watching this, that means you've successfully completed the Maze Trials. I wish I could be there in person to congratulate you... but circumstances seem to have prevented it. I'm sure by now, you must all be very confused, angry, frightened. I can only assure you that everything that's happened to you, everything we've done to you, it was all done for a reason." Dr. Paige said.

We all stare at the monitor curiously so we can know why were put in the maze.

"You won't remember, but the sun has scorched our world. Billions of lives lost to fire, famine, suffering on a global scale. The fallout was unimaginable." she explains.

I cringe at the sight of people dying by the fire and feel tears fill my eyes again. I cling onto Newt while he wraps an arm around me and rubs my shoulder.

"What came after was worse. We called it the Flare, a deadly virus that attacks the brain. It is violent, unpredictable... incurable - or so we thought. In time, a new generation emerged that could survive the virus. Suddenly, there was a reason to hope for a cure, but finding it would not be easy." the woman said.

I cringe even more at the sight of the patient with the Flare. His eyes are all black, his teeth are yellow and covered in black liquid, and his veins are all over his body.

"Oh my God...This is so scary..." I whisper to Newt while hiding my face in his chest from the sight of the patient.

He rubs my shoulder in reassurance.

"I know...shhh.." he whispers.

"The young would have to be tested, even sacrificed, inside harsh environments, where their brain activity could be studied, all in an effort to understand what makes them different - what makes you different. You may not realize it, but you're very important. Unfortunately, your trials have only just begun. As you'll no doubt soon discover, not everyone agrees with our methods. Progress is slow, people are scared. It may be too late for us... for me... but not for you. The outside world awaits. Remember..." she says as she grabs a gun and aims it at the side of her head since soldiers were behind her about to break into her office.
