~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Percy POV~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Three weeks. It had been three weeks since she went missing and for some reason, I could barely hold myself together. I stopped by her room every day, just sat there, looking at every photo she had on the mantel above the fireplace, tacked up on the wall. Most of them were of the two of us. I couldn't recall the last time I'd been on a date that I actually enjoyed with one of the girls. Because in all honesty? I had been ready to propose to Rachel at that ball. My feelings had been so conflicted over the past couple of weeks that most days I wasn't even sure if I could look any of the girls in the eye, much less talk to them. There were girls who I had never doubted that I would get rid of them like Drew, but then there were girls who I had no idea which one to choose, like Rachel and Annabeth. I was sure I at least liked Rachel, she was artistic and courageous. But then there was Annabeth, who was beautiful, smart, and caring. Her face the day of the convicting was still engrained in my mind, that look of betrayal and hurt as I trusted Rachel instead of her. And I could never tell what I was thinking then because now, gods, I could barely get up out of bed in the morning. Here I was eighteen years old, already supposed to have chosen my wife, and my best friend since I was a baby could very well be dead. It was enough to send me into a flurry of doubt and anger. Because in reality, did I really want to marry Rachel? Was she really the girl I wanted to spend the rest of my life with, or just the girl I was settling for?
Everything felt wrong as I got ready for breakfast approximately three weeks and five days after my birthday. My tie was too tight, my suit to wrinkled, and my shoes too small, but after not showing up to breakfast for weeks, my mother insisted I made an appearance today. I clutched a small pendant in my hand, it was coral with the words seaweed brain inscribed on it. Part of the gift I had given to Annabeth. Hers said wise girl, and she had absolutely loved it when I gave it to her, she had put it on the bead necklaces that all of the palace kids had. I smiled at the thought of the bead necklaces, a new bead was made after every summer, painted with the event that we considered the most memorable. I wondered what it would be this summer-and who would paint it. I stuck the pendant on the necklace, smiling sadly at myself in the mirror before heading off to breakfast. The halls were empty, seeing as I was several minutes late, and I bumped into Jason who was chatting with Leo, another one of the guards.
"Hey bro." Jason said, clapping me on the back. "You okay?" I ran a hand through my hair, giving an exasperated sigh.
"Honestly? I'm a wreck." Leo nodded, his mop of curls bouncing up and down.
"That's understandable. Jason said that Pi-" He was cut off when Jason smacked him, his face turning red. I raised my eyebrows. I was aware of course, Jason and Piper's 'forbidden romance' was the chatter around the guard staff, or the crew I usually hung out with. I had no intents whatsoever of ratting either of them out, love was love after all, but I knew Jason had worries. I just laughed.
"Relax Jase, you're not heading to the whipping block." his shoulders relaxed. "What were you saying about Piper?" Jason shook his head.
"She and Reyna are worried sick. Apparently Piper said she thought she heard Annabeth screaming that night, said she was hanging out with some guard." I growled.
"Luke."
"Haven't seen that kid since your ball, I wonder what happened?" Details started to come together in my head, clicking like puzzle pieces.
"That little-"
"Percy?" I whipped my head around to find Rachel, her red curls twisted up in a bun, her flowy white sundress spotted with paint.
"Rachel." She smiled, walking towards me.
"I haven't seen you in days Mr. Where have you been?" her tone was teasing and she gave me a light push.
"Um.."
"Don't worry I know where." her smile didn't falter as she spoke the next words. "Well, I've got to go, but have fun mourning Annabeth or whatever." What was she saying? She skipped away, humming a tune and I couldn't help it, I followed her.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rachel's path lead me to a tapestry. She looked on edge as she turned her head side to side, as if searching for anybody around. After apparently seeing nobody, she pushed lightly on the tapestry and it swung open. She stepped inside carefully and pulled it shut behind her, leaving no sign she was there. I peeked out from the column I was hiding behind, carefully stepping forward until my ear was against the tapestry. There were voices speaking and unfortunately, I recognized them.
"What's the word?" This voice was Rachel's, loud and determined. Another person sighed.
"She's not caving." I growled at the sound of Luke's voice. "She really wants that boy to live." he barked out a laugh.
"I thought the point was to kill him if she didn't!"
"We tried! She started biting and clawing, she stole my gun and threatened to shoot me!"
"Well I'm not having any success. I haven't even gotten to talk to him in weeks."
"Hmph. Do you think they're on to us?" Rachel snorted.
"Not yet. But it's only a matter of time."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I ran. I sprinted past maids and staff, past guards and kitchens, I ran until I could shove open the door of my mother's study.
"Rachel.....Rebels....Kidnap.....Annabeth......Danger." I panted. My mother jumped up from her desk, running over to me.
"Sweetheart slow down. Start from the beginning." So I did. I explained all my suspicions, what I had overheard, and poured out all my feelings as my mom sat and patiently listened. When I finished she sat back, her expression shocked and a little bit angry.
"Mom?"
"Yes sweetheart?"
"What are you thinking?"
"I'm thinking," she said, her mouth in a determined line, "That it's time we do things Sally's way."
Aaaaand..Done! That was a little painful to right, ngl. I hope you guys enjoyed it, and I can't wait for the next chapter!
Lots of Love,
Reader Review: If you had to choose any character from any fandom to live with for a day, who would it be? Mine would be Sally Jackson, enough said.
