I looked into Nhedri's large, autumn brown eyes, beautiful and trembling, then dropped my head.

"I'm sorry—"

"Do you love her?" She asked in a soft tone.

I raised my hand, "Nhedri—"

"Don't touch me," She took a step back to keep out of reach. "Do you love her?"

Her words made my head spin and my stomach twist. I shook my head, "no. I love you. Always have. Alway will." And took a deep breath. "That kiss was only a farewell kiss—"

Nhedri raised her chin, expelling a high, mocking laugh. She turned her back upon me. "Is that what it was? A farewell kiss?" She gazed over her left shoulder. "Is that how Merfolk say goodbye?"

I shrugged. "We've all been through a lot ... I'm sure Aqule got caught up in her emotion."

Nhedri raised an eyebrow and her eyes flicked with light. "Only Aqule? Seemed you weren't fighting it."

I gazed upon the pool and rubbed the back of my head. "I didn't want to be rude—"

"Rude?" She laughed while her eyes narrowed. "But of course not ..."

A hot energy passed from my chest to my head, and my brows furrowed. I stepped up to her and swung my arm from my shoulder to my hip. "It didn't mean anything, Nhedri ... When our lips touched I was cold and numb ... but when I met yours, I was filled with a warmth that swelled inside my heart. A loving warmth. One that still lingers to this day and burns every time I think about the moment we shared." I grabbed her hand and she pulled, but I clung tightly. "You're the only person I've ever loved." She pulled again, but I whipped her back, swinging her around, and catching her in my arms. She pushed against my chest, trying to squirm from my arms, but I didn't allow her to break my grasp. I squeezed harder, our eyes locking. And before she could turn her head, I pressed my lips against hers.

A flood of warmth passed from her lips to mine, and I guided her lips open with my own, extending my tongue just enough for the tip to greet hers. My eyelids pinched close as our tongues swam together, massaging each other gently, until my breath waned and my heart beat like a Hortz drum.

We pulled away as our eyelids slowly lifted, our eyes locking once again. "I love you ... and only you."

Nhedri lips raised and curled as she caught her breath. "And I you." She clenched me harder, pressing her face closer to mine. I smelt the raspberry on her breath, the same raspberry smell that my tongue tingled with. "But if you allow anything like that to happen again my love will turn to wrath ... where not even your skin armour can save you." She turned on a heel, looking upon the cave exit. "Now, we must get going. If the Merfolk flee they'll be using these pools."

I nodded and then followed closely behind Nhedri, keeping my fingers locked as she guided me to where Mayhee was tied down. I grabbed at her hips, and crouched, ready to hoist her up. She swatted my hands away. "No Lady Horn of the prairie needs the assistance of a man to mount." And in a swift motion, stepped in the stirrup and threw her leg over the horse, whipping her braided black hair over her right shoulder.
