Nandini
Throughout the day I couldn't able to relax as the silent depression drained my energy. And now sitting in his conference room for the registration caused me to worry. I understood that I had agreed to his proposal, but I didn't know it would be too soon, at least I was hoping to have a month to prepare myself mentally to spend the rest of my life with him.
Forcing a smile, I watched the lawyer who was reciting the words Manik directed him to tell.
But the moment I heard the word 'marriage', everything stopped, in second, everything went shut— heart started to race, hands trembled as the lawyer passed me the paper to sign. I watched it like I had no idea what to do with that. And that was enough to blow my mind out of the surroundings. I almost losing when Manik deep voice rang besides me which brought me to present. "Sign the paper, Nandini." Warning was clearly written in his words.
"Ridiculous! What kind of a marriage is this? No priest, no regulations— nothing. Is this even a real marriage? " Manik's grandma angrily reacted to the situation, only I could laugh.
Me, already sensed their glare without looking at them, and as usual Manik stood on his point, didn't leave a place to argue. "A my kind of marriage, grandma." His voice was cold and firm. "And yes, it's a real marriage. Authentic and legit— a simple one, just my Nandini wanted." Before I could react, he took my left hand and placed his right hand on my back like ordering me to go through with the conduct quickly. "Sweetheart, sign the paper. We can't waste the time as we need to wend for our wedding night." Winking playfully at me like he couldn't wait to get me, but only I could hear the mockery in his voice.
And... wait! Where the hell is this 'Sweetheart' come from?
I took the pen he had offered and sign my name. Then staring at his sign_ bold and big, even here his sign intimidating my little one. Before I could examine more Manik snatch the paper from my hand and looked at my sign carefully with a chauvinist eyes. When he was satisfied he returned the paper to his lawyer. "I think all is done, right?" Manik asked, but His mother interrupted this time.
"No. It's not done. A paper can't define anything." She looked passed me, and then I saw the lawyer was holding a cruet of vermillion and a mangalsutra. "You have to apply vermillion and put the mangalsutra on her."
"Hell not! She doesn't need those."
Mani stood up and ready to leave. But his mother again stopped him. "Okay. Fine. Then I am taking Nandini and my grandson with me. I don't see any point of her staying here without those thing. A registry is done and it would be enough to secure your position."
A slight hope started to shine in my mind.
"Oh, Mamma. There is still things that need to be done. But just because you insisted I am ready to follow." He walked up to me and took the vermillion and applied above my forehead and put the mangalsutra on me. "Done. Now you all can leave or enjoy the feast. I need my wife."
