Dragon Egg

Emma's POV

It's ten weeks before exams start and Hermione is having us study hard. So hard I have been taking breaks with Fay. We did not get to see Hagrid after Gryffindor's match against Hufflepuff. Which we won by a land slide.

But we are going to see him today. Coal is excited about seeing Fang. They have become good friends and play whenever I go to Hagrid's hut. "Are you ready Em?" Hermione asks me.

"Yes" I state as I grab Coal's harness. We meet the boys in the common room. Then leave for Hagrid's hut. When we arrive I knock on the door.

"Who is it?" Hagrid calls from inside.

"It's us Hagrid" Harry says and Hagrid lets us in. We go in and he shuts the door behind us quickly. It was stifling hot inside. Even though it was such a warm day, I can hear a fire crackling in the grate. Hagrid makes us all a cup of tea each. I remove Coal's harness.

"So -- yeh wanted to ask me somethin'?" Hagrid asks us as I take a sip of my tea.

"Yes. We were wondering if you could tell us what's guarding the philosopher's Stone apart from Fluffy" Harry tells him. Not beating around the bush.

"O' course I can't" Hagrid tells him. "Number one, I don' know meself. Number two, yeh know too much already, so I wouldn' tell yeh if I could. That Stone's here fer a good reason. It was almost stolen outta Gringotts -- I s'ppose yeh've worked that out. Beats me how yeh even know abou' Fluffy" he explains.

"Oh, come on, Hagrid" I say pouting in his general direction.

"You might not want to tell us, but you do know, you know everything that goes on round here" Hermione says flattering him.

"We only wondered who had done the guarding, really. Aside from you" I state.

"Yes, we wondered who Dumbledore had trusted enough to help him, apart from you" Hermione adds.

"Well, I don' s'pose it could hurt ter tell yeh that" he tells us. "He borrowed Fluffy from me. Then some o' the teachers did enchantments; Professor Sprout, Professor Flitwick, Professor McGonagall" he says. " Who else? Oh yes, Professor Quirrell an' Dumbledore himself did somethin', o' course. Hang on, I've forgotten someone. Oh yeah, Professor Snape" he tells us.

"Snape?" the other three ask shocked.

"Yeah -- yer not still on abou' that, are yeh? Look, Snape helped protect the Stone, he's not about ter steal it" Hagrid assures us.

"You're the only one who knows how to get past Fluffy. aren't you, Hagrid?" I ask him.

"And you wouldn't tell anyone, would you? Not even one of the teachers?" Harry asks.

"Not a soul knows except me an' Dumbledore" Hagrid says proudly. "I shouldn't have told you that. I shouldn't have told you that" he mutters under his breath. Suddenly I hear something rattling against metal.

"What is that?" I ask the others confused.

"Uh, Hagrid, what exactly is that?" Harry asks as I hear something placed on the table.

"I know what that is! But Hagrid, how did you get one?" Ron asks him.

"Get a what?" I whine.

"A giant egg" Hermione tells me.

"I won it. Off a stranger I met down at a pub. Seemed quite glad to be rid off it, as a matter of fact" Hagrid explains. The egg rattles and cracks. Squeaks then feel the air.

"Is that a dragon?" Hermione asks in awe.

"That's not just a dragon. That's a Norwegian Ridgeback! My brother Charlie works with these in Romania" Ron explains.

"Isn't he beautiful? Oh. Bless him, look. He knows his mummy. Hehe. Hallo, Norber" Hagrid cheers as the dragon squeaks.

"Hagrid how are you going to raise a dragon?" I ask him.

"Well, I've bin doin' some reading" he states. "Got this outta the library -- Dragon Breeding for Pleasure and Profit -- it's a bit outta date, o' course, but it's all in here. Keep the egg in the fire, 'cause their mothers breathe on I em, see, an' when it hatches, feed it on a bucket o' brandy mixed with chicken blood every half hour" he explains.

"Ron how quick do Norwegian Ridgeback's grow?" Hermione asks.

"No idea" he says. I feel something nudge my hand and smile.

"Hello Norbert" I say as I pat the dragon. He chirps happily.

"Oh he likes you" Hagrid coos. "Who's that?" he demands.

"Malfoy" Harry says.

"Oh dear" I say.

"Malfoy could go to Dumbledore at any moment" Harry states.

"I know I can't keep him forever, but I can't jus' dump him, I can't" Hagrid tells us.

"Charlie" Hermione says.

"You're losing it, I'm Ron" Ron states.

"No -- Charlie -- your brother, Charlie. In Romania. Studying dragons" Hermione states.

"We could send Norbert to him. Charlie can take care of him and then put him back in the wild" Harry explains.

"Sounds brilliant" I tell them.

"How about it, Hagrid?" Ron asks. Hagrid agrees reluctantly and Ron said he'd send Charlie an owl tomorrow. Hopefully we'll be able to send Norbert to Romania before anyone else finds out about him.
