MERCY AWOKE TO THE SUN on her face: a warm feeling that caused her body to stir in annoyance. At the motion, she heard the crunching of leaves, and with her eyes still closed to the bright light, she smiled. Her body felt lighter, as if she had just discarded a weight that she had been harboring around for the past few days. It was calm as well, and Mercy could hear the first singing songs that the birds started up; it sounded like she was in a fairytale, and she was almost afraid of waking up and ruining the perfect picture she had created in her mind. She always loved the mornings after a full moon.

But alas, she knew that she couldn't lay in the sun all day, specifically because she knew that she was completely naked under Keokuk's cloak that hung over her shoulders. She shifted, feeling her hair tug at Tayen's crown still settled precariously on Mercy's head. When she finally opened her eyes, she had to blink a few times to see what was around her, and when she did, she gasped.

Mercy scrambled back, her eyes wide and flustered when she saw the body that laid next to her.

Tokala slept peacefully, undisturbed by Mercy's movement—and once she had gotten her bearings together and wrapped the cloak tighter around her bare body, she noticed that he looked serene when he slept. There were no smirks or cockiness or even worry in his features, and it was refreshing to see Tokala so peaceful.

She shook the thought away as quickly as it came, glancing around herself to make sure they were alone. The forest had been full of wolves before, but now they descended back into the shadows; even Lyra wasn't next to Mercy when she woke up. She extended her hearing out, but she found that the woods were silent, not a soul in sight to witness the flabbergasted expression on Mercy's face.

The exact same expression deepened and her face turned bright red when she realized that Tokala was completely naked as well.

Averting her eyes and standing on shaky legs, Mercy wasn't sure if she should stay until he woke or just leave him here and wait for him to find her later—as he surely would. She wanted to talk to him, to ask about how his eyes had been the same as hers and whether or not she could still touch the surface of his emotions like last night. Just as she was beginning to turn—understanding that if she got caught with Tokala in this predicament, her father might actually kill her this time—the boy in question shifted, the leaves crunching under him like they had done to her just a moment ago.

Frozen in either shock or embarrassment, Mercy watched the boy rub his eyes open, and he immediately found her eyes. She didn't meet his gaze, preferring to look up at the sky to avoid any sight of his toned skin, but she knew that Tokala wouldn't let the silence go uninterrupted.
