I looked down at my coffee cup. Sarah placed her engagement ring in the mug. What for, I didn't know. Why now? I needed to know. I hoped in my truck and passed stoplights and street signs, wrapping my fingers around the steering wheel, wondering what I said or did to make her break it off. When nothing comes to mind, my eyes went cold.

"Sarah!" I said, catching up to her before she walked into the office. "What's this all about?" I said, holding the ring in the air.

"Oh, that. I was going to tell you..."

"Seeing someone else?"

"Not exactly."

"Wait. What?"

"I'm having a midlife crisis."

"So, you're going to cheat?"

"I wanted to make some changes."

"I can't believe this is happening," I said, holding my hands above my head. "What did I do?"

"I want to change the stone in my engagement ring, you idiot. I didn't say I want to break up. I figured this was the only way to get your attention. Your work has taken its toll on us both."

"Why didn't you just say this at home?"

"Oh, come on, Dad. You know that's not like me."

"Wait, did you call me, Dad?"

"Which brings me to my second point. You're going to be a father, and we're throwing a party."

"You're something else." I laughed.
