Lexi Pov
"Are you tired, Doc? You look pale." Erwin commented.
Of course I'm tired, not-yet-Commander Cockbrows. I've been revising what I'm going to be telling your Government pigs since the moment I left with Hange for that well-deserved shower. I grumbled internally, closing my eyes and tilting my head back.
"It's been a nerve-wracking couple of days, sir," I replied breathlessly, pushing the rising feelings of carsickness into the furthest corners of my mind.
"We still have a couple of hours before we manage to get into Mitras. Why don't you catch a quick nap?" Hange suggested.
"Mitras? The Capitol? But that's all the way to the very heart of the Walls." I said, surprised that my case would be being held at the very centre of Sina- the city of Mitras.
As far as my limited knowledge went, the nobility such as the King and pigs of the Government resided there. But was my case so important as to go all the way to Mitras? The King and his "superior" nobility wouldn't care that much about a factor in the Underground, no matter how many "miracles" I create.
"Since Doctors are rare, a lot of people want to know about you, Doc. That includes the King and the rest of nobility." Shadis answered.
Ah, shit.
"Dozens of rumours about you have spread throughout the streets. Your name is quite popular among citizens. Some revere you as a God- and it's creating a clash with the Wallists and the Priests. Some think that you're nothing but a fake. Some think that you're a gift sent from the Heavens, and some think that you're a witch who has made a deal with the Devil." Erwin started.
He just made my chances of death a lot higher than I thought it would be. Politics, religion, and witchcraft? That's literally the worst combo right now!!
"Showing proof of the fact that you're human, and that you can't create miracles such as bringing back the dead will be enough to convince the nobles that you're just a civilian with some... unorthodox ways of healing people. Do not worry. We need you alive and kicking." Erwin continued, seeming to notice the anger and annoyance that flashed through my face.
"You have also brought some other valuable soldiers to my attention, and I do not wish to have my throat slit in the middle of the night after recruiting them." He finished, an amused smirk on his face.
"Valuable soldiers"? ...He must mean Levi, Furlan ad Isabel. But what all that about getting his throat slit?
Oh.
I see.
Levi would probably have Erwin's head if something happened to me under his watch.
They'll be coming for him one way or another, though.
FLASHBACK: Two Days before Levi's Birthday
"Hey Doc, there's a guy asking for the Miracle Doctor at the door," Furlan commented, calling out from his spot at the front door.
In order to protect my identity, the others never called me by my name when customers or any of the other members of the group were here. It was one of the multiple reasons why no one could make up their mind regarding the features of the Miracle Doctor. Dressing up quickly with a wig, tinted glasses, hat and a tattered cloak around my body, I walked out of my room to deal with the customer.
Ones who called me out personally, at the front door split into two groups: one whose loved ones were at the edge of death and desperately needed help, and those who wanted me to concoct a poison for them in return for a hefty price.
"What do you want? I'm busy." I grunted, using a lower voice than usual.
"I'm a servant from Lord Lovof's manor. I have a request from him to you." The man stated, craning his head and eyes around in order to try and get a better look at my face.
"State his request, then. What are you waiting for?" I replied, crossing my arms.
There were lots of pills to sort out and make. Today was also cleaning day, and I didn't know when I would be getting interrupted by Levi to clean. In short, I didn't have time to be lollydaddling with this servant.
"He wants a poison that kills quickly but seems like natural death," The servant stated, getting to the point.
"For whom and for what reason does he want the victim killed?"
"I can't answer that."
"Then we're done here."
"What?! But-"
"Tell him to come back when he's ready to tell me everything," I stated, closing the door in the man's face.
Lovof asking for poison from me... it most likely meant that he was looking for a way to kill Erwin. Being the anti-scout noble he was, the old man didn't like Erwin. I just had to find a way for Lovof to extend his "request" to Levi and the others, not me.
Thankfully enough, I knew exactly what to do to manipulate that old geezer.
FLASHBACK OVER
~~~ // ~~~ \\\ ~~~
The second time the servant came by, Lexi confirmed that Lovof's goal was to kill Erwin and told the servant about a group of thugs that were able to use ODM gear. She suggested that in return for the trio getting citizenship aboveground, she could make them accept his request. And that's how Lexi shoved the plot back on track.
