Chapter 4

Liana woke up sweating. She'd parked in the shade last night because the temperature was warm but the wind was still blowing.

She had to keep the windows up to keep the things in her car from blowing away. Plus she can't sleep with direct air hitting her face. It's very uncomfortable.

She's sweating like a pig. Her clothes Is sticking to her body. Right now would be the best time to take a muscle relaxing warm shower.

She got out of the car and stretched. Her body isn't going to be able to take much more of sleeping in this tight place.

Her back aches and so does her legs.

Three more months and she'll have that apartment she wants. She'll have her normal life back. She doesn't know if she can last that long though. If the heat keeps warming up this fast she'll have to settle for a cheaper apartment in a neighborhood that she doesn't want to stay in.

She folded up her blankets and placed them in the trunk.

Any other woman would probably be scared to camp out on this dirt road by themselves. Liana knows this spot though. No one ever comes around here. Its a dead end dark place. She's not afraid. It is perfectly safe.

She pulled her hair into a tight bun. It really needs to be washed. There's no time for that. She has to be at work in a hour and there is no plug in the gas station's bathroom for her blow dryer. She'll return to wash it later tonight.

After straightening up her things, she drove to the gas station.

"Good morning," she said.

This time Ray isn't at the front register. Instead it's his wife. They are a mixed couple that you wouldn't expect to see around. He's white, she's Chinese.

She's a short sweet woman with a bob cut hairstyle with a bang. When she smiled her little eyes squinted.

"Hi there. You are Vanessa daughter."

"Um.... Yes." She wasn't sure where she was going with this.

"Your mama, she ask about you. She worries about you."

"Please tell me that you didn't tell her that you have seen me here. Please! I'm begging you."

The way she's feeling about her mom right now, she never wants to see her again.

Her father's broken necklace weighs heavy and burns a hole in her pocket each day. Her mother's betrayal weighs heavier.

It's time that she moves on from her mother. Her drunkenness has depressed her for years. Every time she has tried to run away from the mental and physical abuse, she sees her mom's face and loses all hope that she will ever be able to do it.

During the time that Liana's father was alive all she can remember is how easygoing everything seemed to be. Life was all rainbows and butterflies back then.

Her dad loved life and he loved his jewelry. When he died, in her heart she felt like all his love that she ever felt from him was still alive and in that jewelry. Feeling that helped her cope with his death.

Knowing that her mother purposely broke the necklace has blackened her heart towards her mother.

Liana can no longer feel her father's love when she holds it.

The only thing that is holding her together is her throwing herself all the way into her job and finding things to distract her there.

"I tell her nothing. I have two kids. They run and laugh when they see her. And me no trust alcoholic," she said quickly.
