Derek sprinted out of the cafeteria and down the hallway to Meredith's room. When he approached it he heard laughing and felt some relief and stopped running. He walked into Meredith's room and saw Meredith and his mom laughing and talking. He was still out of breathe and stood in the doorway.
"You paged?" Derek asked out of breath
"Yeah, your mom just got here." Meredith said
"So there's no emergency? You're not dying?" Derek asked with a serious face
"Nope, but I am starving." Meredith said with a slight laugh
"Oh, me too! Could you run down to the cafeteria and grab me a chicken salad if they have any?" Carolyn responded
Derek laughed and shook his head as he walked back to the cafeteria. He was happy his mom and his wife were getting along even if they had him running around the hospital. He passed by the pit on his way there and saw Wilson and Edwards fighting over a patient, he chuckled and kept walking to the cafeteria.
When he got there he saw Bailey and Arizona getting in line for lunch so he joined them.
"Hey! How's Meredith doing?" Arizona asked
"Good, my mom just got here and they're getting along."
"Is that why they have you getting food for them?" Bailey asked
"Yep." Derek sighed
Arizona and Bailey both laughed
"What's so funny?"
"Meredith's gonna have you running around the hospital the whole time she's recovering." Bailey said
"Get used to it." Arizona said as her and Bailey went to sit down at a table
Derek shook his head and started walking back to Meredith's room. He saw Carolyn showing Meredith some pictures and laughing together. He walked in confused.
"I was just showing Meredith your yearbook photos from middle school." Carolyn laughed as she handed Derek a picture
"So you two are bonding over my embarrassing middle school pictures?" Derek asked as he sat down next to Meredith
"Look how cute you were" Meredith laughed as she showed him his seventh grade yearbook photo
"Not my best moment" Derek chuckled
"How are the kids?" Carolyn asked
"They're in daycare, I can take you to see them."
"I know the way, i'll give you two a minute."
"I think sixth grade is my favorite." Meredith laughed pointing at his sixth grade yearbook picture
Derek smiled and grabbed the picture from her and put it in his pocket. He grabbed her hand and softly kissed her, she put her hand on his cheek and pulled him closer.
"How's your hand?" He asked as he let go of her injured hand and held it in his.
"Good, it doesn't hurt anymore." Meredith said as she closed her hand and opened it again
"I'll ask Bailey when you can get out of here."
"Yes please" Meredith chuckled
"Zola and Bailey always ask me 'When's mommy coming home?' and Bailey won't go to sleep unless I tell him you're fine."
"Bailey's such a mama's boy."
"He is."
Meredith continued to recover from surgery and rest in the hospital. Bailey told her that she could go home in 2 weeks if nothing else happened. During those two weeks Meredith started walking around her room every once in a while and doing PT for her hand. After 2 weeks passed Derek went home to bring her a change of clothes.
