"Dr. Grey? Dr. Grey?" Meredith heard as she started opening her eyes
"Your husband is here." The nurse next to Meredith said slowly with a smile.
As Meredith opened her eyes and was finally able to process what the nurse said Derek slowly walked in.
"Hey" Derek whispered as he sat next to her on her bed and placed his hand on hers.
"Hey" Meredith whispered back with a small smile.
Meredith could see guilt all over Derek's face and she knew that he felt guilty for not getting home in time.
"I'm sorry" Derek said looking down
He couldn't look her in the eyes after she had almost died and he wasn't there when he could've been.
"It's not your fault." She said holding his hand tighter than before
"Meredith I-"
"Derek, it wasn't your fault. Okay? I'm still here. You can't get rid of me that easily." Meredith said
Derek knew she was right but he still couldn't help but feel guilty for not being there, but she was right and he couldn't go back in time.
"Okay" He whispered as she pulled him into a hug
"We have another baby" Meredith whispered into his ear
"We do" Derek said with a smile and hugged her tighter
Soon after they talked the nurse brought their new daughter in and Derek was the first to hold her.
"She looks like you." Meredith pointed out as soon as they saw her
Derek looked at Meredith and had the biggest smile ever.
"You think so?" Derek chuckled and lifted the baby next to his face as a way to compare them.
"She does!" Meredith chuckled
They spent a couple more minutes thinking of names and spending time with their new daughter.
"What about Ellis?" Derek asked looking at Meredith
Meredith was surprised he suggested that because it was exactly what she was thinking.
"Ellis it is then" Meredith said and they both smiled
Before any of them could say anything else Derek's phone rang and they had both realized that nobody else knew that Meredith had her baby.
"Hello?" Derek said as he answered the phone
"Can you tell me why Grey isn't answering my pages, phone calls, or messages?" Bailey asked
Derek didn't say anything, he just took a picture of him and baby Ellis and sent it to Bailey.
"Hello? Shepherd?" Bailey asked when she got no response
"Oh My- Why didn't anyone tell me?!" Bailey squealed when she opened the picture
"We'll talk to you later Bailey" Derek said taking the phone away from his ear to hang up
"Oh okay, congrats!" Bailey said before hanging up
Derek and Meredith spent a couple hours with Ellis and calling Derek's family to tell them about the new member of the Shepherd family. Meredith called and texted Cristina about Ellis and she congratulated them before claiming the position of godmother as she did with Zola and Bailey.
She also called Alex who tried claiming godfather but was mad when he found out the Cristina had claimed it. Alex had known Meredith went into labor when she didn't show up to work for a surgery they had both planned together. Instead of calling her or telling Bailey he did the surgery alone so she wouldn't have to worry about it and waited for Meredith to call him.
As it got dark Derek kissed Meredith goodbye and went home to set up a crib for baby Ellis to sleep in. He opened the door to a quiet and dark house. He walked upstairs into the nursery room and turned the light on, he took his coat off and rolled up his sleeves as he pulled out the crib that was half assembled in the closet.
Halfway through assembling it Amelia came home with the kids. She noticed that Derek was home because of the keys on the counter and the nursery light being on. She put Bailey and Zola to bed as she walked into the nursery room she noticed Derek struggling with the crib.
"Jeez you'd think a brain surgeon would be able to put a crib together no problem." She chuckled as she knelt down to help him
"I can put a crib together very well actually. It's just that this piece isn't labeled and it looks identical to this one so it should fit where the other one went but it doesn't and know I don't know where it goes because it isn't labeled and I've tried everywhere but it just doesn't fit anywhere." Derek sighed frustrated waving two pieces of wood in the air while explaining
Amelia took the piece from him and flipped it upside down and found a little sticker that said "A7" and showed it to Derek who scoffed and picked up the manual to find out where the piece went.
"Are you okay?" Amelia asked as she watched her brother get angry trying to unfold the paper with instructions and give up after.
"Yeah I just- I don't know." He responded placing his hand on his forehead thinking about how he felt
"What?"
"I just feel really... I don't know guilty." He reluctantly replied
"About?" Amelia asked concerned
"Meredith. I almost lost her, she almost died and I wasn't there." Derek replied looking down at the floor
"Derek you can't blame yourself for that. As soon as you heard you came right back, don't put that all on yourself."
"I was in DC Amelia. I left her and I didn't even bother to think of how she felt when I left. If I had just been there maybe this wouldn't have happened."
"That's not true, you being here wouldn't have changed anything and you feeling bad about it isn't gonna make it go away or change anything. I mean, sure you weren't here but neither was Cristina or Alex. They were off at fancy hospitals or doing cool surgeries somewhere else and you can't blame them for anything that happened. Derek you can't carry this mountain of guilt when you know you don't deserve to feel this way." Amelia told him while placing her hand on his shoulder to comfort him.
"Thank you" He whispered looking at her with a small smile.
"Anytime" She replied hugging him and then continuing building the crib with him.
