MATTIA

I stepped out the black Rolls Royce. Paparazzi crowded us as I held a hand out, holding them back as several security guards came to help hold them back. One of them glared at me whilst I took a step back, brushing down my tuxedo.

"Aren't you going to help us?"

"I'm the bodyguard, not the help" I said blankly, turning and opening the backseat door.

"Ready, Ma'am?" I asked, admiring her as she smiled back at me. I'd never seen her this beautiful. I'd seen her many times but today she was nothing short of breathtaking.

"I told you, call me Athena" she smiled, taking my hand and getting out the car. Her smooth skin brushed against mine as she straightened out her dress. I held out my arm for her as she took it, sending the best chills through my body.

~They looked like a couple.
Everything he'd ever wanted~

We walked up the set of stairs, I stayed on the concrete as she graced the narrow red carpet. Her presence was nothing short of heavenly to me.

They reached the top of the stairs and a lady smiled at us. She held a clipboard in one hand and spoke into her headset as we approached her.

"Names?" she asked. I narrowed his eyes at her, surely she should've known.

"Athena Davidson" I said for her, watching her smile vanish as she realised who she was.

"Oh my god" she said, becoming flustered as Athena smiled softly at her. "I'm such a fan, goodness I can't believe it's really you".

I looked at Athena as she continued to ramble on. Her skin was glowing, almost radiant as she listened to the woman sing her name in the highest praises.

"This is my bodyguard, Mattia Polibio" she said, introducing me. I greeted the woman by shaking her hand. She gave me an enthusiastic smile.

"Is the rest of your family here?" she asked. I looked out at the fans all behind the paparazzi. One girl was holding a poster with Athena's face on it, another with a poster of Athena and I stood together with a heart around it. I smiled and waved at the girl, watching her scream as she waved back.

"They're on their way" she said, tugging on my arm gently. I quickly gave her my attention again and cleared my throat, staring at the woman who was now becoming irritating.

"Thank you" I interrupted "for the warm welcome but we need to move along"

"Oh yes, of course" she said, opening the doors for us. We walked inside as Athena laughed softly.

"Care to share the joke?" I asked her quietly.

"She was so kind to us, I feel bad for wanting to leave so bad" she said. We stood at one of the tables as I took two glasses of champagne from one of the waiters. I handed one to her and kept the other.

"Don't feel bad" I said "you're famous, you'll get used to it I'm sure"

"Cheers to being famous" she smirked, clinking her glass against mine. I raised the glass to my lips, watching her down it in one.

"Someone's nervous" I said, eyeing her suspiciously as I took a sip. She shook her head, dabbing at the corners of her lips with a tissue.

"No I'm fine, you?" she asked, changing the subject I nodded my head, even though I was keeping a secret from her. But I couldn't tell her. At least not here. It was neither the place nor the time.

"I'm great, sooo happy to be here" I said sarcastically, making her laugh. She was famous but she hated big events like this, thanks to her social anxiety.

That was one perk of working for Athena. I'd learned so much about her. Her favourite colour, her favourite cuisine, her worst fears.

"You're a liar" she chuckled lightly, setting her glass down on the table and looking into my eyes "now tell me what's bothering you"

"It can wait" I said, dismissing it. I rested my hand on hers but she was persistent. It was her blessing yet her curse.

"You're my friend before my bodyguard, Mattia"

I looked at her for a second, her green eyes were slowly growing concerned as the seconds passed. But just as I opened my mouth to confess, a loud an obnoxious voice entered the hall.

"Baby!"

We turned around to see her boyfriend walking towards us. A smile spread across her face as she embraced him, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck. Whilst her back was turned, I swapped my empty champagne glass for a full one.

"When did you get here?" he asked, pulling away. He stood in between us, keeping an arm around her waist as he spoke to me.

"A few minutes ago, Sir"

"Don't call me that" he laughed, punching me in the shoulder. I wanted to deliver a right hook to his jaw but I stayed still, fake laughing with him instead.

"Have you seen the fans and their posters?" I asked, knowing it would irritate him.

"Yeah, it's bullshit" he mumbled, taking a sip from his glass and moving his face closer to Athena's ear.

"Let's sneak around to the back"

She narrowed her eyes at him but there was still a smile on her lips.

"You can't go one day without sex" she said bluntly. Couldn't she see that? That's all he wanted her for.

"Yes because it's you" he flirted, tilting her chin upwards.

I felt sick as he continued to lie to her. All I wanted to do was put a bullet through his head. But at the same time, I wanted my pay check. So I did what I'd been doing for the past year.

Bit my tongue and got on with my life.

After all, how was I supposed to tell the woman I was supposed to protect that the supposed love of her life was cheating on her?
