I'm really sorry for this story. I don't know what went on down there too... I just kept going....

Also, I edited this (again).

---------------------

"They said this psychological disorder makes a person more intelligent and more charming... It makes it a lot easier for them to behave and fake normalcy..."

These words kept repeating in your head like a broken record player ever since you have accidentally overheard them from a conversation between your soon-to-be in-laws one tension-filled night as you made your way around the seemingly empty house to announce your arrival.

It was something you had never expected to hear from what you initially perceived was a normal, if not a slightly bit stoic, couple with a smart, attractive, and overly achieving son who was well within the road to becoming a capable doctor or remarkable lawyer in his future.

But perhaps, even the best of families can have a secret tucked in the depths of their closet that could send their whole foundation spiraling downwards into the very pits of hell should it come out.

The world could oftentimes be cruelly judgemental and everyone knew that. So to preserve the dignity and prominence that his predecessors have worked decades to acquire, it has been decided to keep a secret something that is, by all obvious means, not exactly a problem.

And based on the unconcerned and matter-of-factly manner in which the mother has spoken the statement, it was clear to you that whatever it was that Lawrence had was not something that baffled them, but instead something that, by a long history of observation, has been proven to bring more honor and pride to his family.

And thinking about the past, it all made sense.

Lawrence was always at the top of his class - unconcerned by the common, friend-making needs of other children his age - and had never once played favorites with any of his peers. His cool demeanor and objective view, apart from his focus and diligence in his studies, has earned him an impression of being wise beyond his years.

And you can attest to that.

You just didn't know then that he wasn't really unbiased or mature. Nor was he just being the emphatic kid who does not pry when issues arise.

He really just doesn't care.

That was not the horrifying part for you however.

What scared you was the fact that you found well within yourself that this piece of "news" did not surprise you at all.

No wonder...

You had to be honest that you knew of its legitimacy given that you had been attached like a bee to the hive with Lawrence ever since you had both started studying at the age of five. You had noticed the shifts in his moods and behaviors, as well as the changes in his expressions and tone that normal people, or otherwise those who do not know him as much as you, would fail to pick up on.

It made you form together so many things.

Including how you were not imagining what you see during the countless times that you look over in his direction after anyone from the class or council makes the audacious move of contradicting his words. How the malicious glint of frigid hatred flashing ever so slightly in his beautiful brown eyes and across his impassive expression was exactly as you thought they were. And how the sudden chill that runs down your spine from the inapparent nuance in his tone when things fail to proceed as he planned them was not just because your mind was assuming what it had heard.
