Eugene was perched on the window sill of one of the lesser visited rooms in the fourth floor hallway. It was his safe haven for when he wants to be alone for none of the other survivors frequent the area unless they have a very good reason to.
He was sat on the wooden base, dangling his feet outside without a care while his eyes fixated on a single daisy of which he was plucking petals from one by one.
There was a look of preoccupation in his amber-colored eyes as if his mind was somewhere truly distant from where he physically was. He remained unfettered despite the coolness of the early winter breeze gliding over his soft skin.
"She loves me..." he spoke softly, picking off another petal from the poor flower.
Then he paused and took a breath. Pulling off another petal he spoke again, "She loves me not."
He seemed to have been doing that for a while now and the frustration on his face was growing in intensity as he gets closer to the end - close enough to make a guess what the final petal would cause his lips to utter.
For the umpteenth time, Eugene breathed out deeply. As he was about to pick another petal off the flower, your pretty face popped out next to him, smiling as though you have never to set your sights on anything so delicate before.
"Hey, Eugene. What'cha doing?" you asked, your bright eyes steadied on him a while before wandering to the small flower trapped in between his hands.
"None of your business. Get lost." he answered coldly before throwing the flower out, it's small form being carried away by the wind to the distant bushes below.
He clicked his tongue, realizing he has made a mistake because of his awkwardness. Now he will never know what the last phrase will be when the final petal of the flower was pulled.
Eugene closed his eyes momentarily to catch his breath, but before he did, he saw your face scrunch up in regret for disturbing such a peaceful moment for him.
"Sorry, Eugene. Lawrence was looking for you." you spoke apologetically and he knew you meant it. "Did I interrupt something?"
After waiting for another minute and not receiving a reply, you smiled hesitantly and made a move to join him.
Your hands gripped the sides of the window tightly, and put a foot on the base to test the strength of the wooden foundation. Trying your best to keep your balance, you slowly shifted your mass onto the wood to check if it could handle the additional weight. The wood creaked loudly but held it's form telling you that it's okay to proceed.
You nudged at Eugene to give you space and the boy looked at you with a surprised frown. He grumbled something underneath his breath, but then moved a little away, allowing you space to sit down next to him.
The open window barely managed to fit two people and your arms rubbed against each other as a result. Eugene felt nervous feeling your soft arm through your clothes.
"I told you to go away." he spoke with an irritated sigh, turning his body away to hide the blush that appeared on his pale face because of your sudden proximity.
"Why? I wanted to talk to you too." you responded.
Eugene shot you a look of disbelief, eyes wide for a second before returning to his usual, deadpan expression. "What do you want to talk to me about?" he asked quietly, looking away once more.
You set yours sights to the distance, from the tall buildings, one of which your mother used to go to for her work, to the small houses in the nearby neighborhood, thinking to yourself which of them you have visited before.
