Chapter 27

Leo's POV

It was almost time for luch when I woke up. Kate lay with her back to me, still fast asleep. I moved closer towards her and pecked a kiss in the curve of her neck. A smile appeared on her face. She slowly turned over and opened her eyes. "Good morning.", she murmured, rubbing her eyes. "Good morning, sweetie. Did you sleep well?"  Kate nodded. "Never slept better.", she said, laughing. She slid her hand behind my neck and brought my face closer to hers. Then she kissed me tenderly. "How about skipping lunch and having some nice pancakes instead?", I asked. "Sounds wonderful.", Kate replied. I got up and went downstairs to make breakfast then.

Kate's POV

I lay in bed, looking at the ceiling. I smiled to myself when I thought about the last night. Then I got dressed and followed Leo downstairs. He was standing in the kitchen, making pancakes. I walked towards him and pecked a kiss on his back. "Do you need help?", I asked as he turned around and smiled at me. "No. Sit down and I'll cook for you.", he said smiling. I did what he said and sat down. Then I watched him making his famous pancakes everyone loved.

In the afternoon, Kate and Leo went to town. When they arrived at a small café, they sat down at a table by the window. They were too caught up in each other to notice Ned staring at them from the other side of the café. Ned got more and more angry, when he saw how happy Kate was with Leo and how much he made her laugh. What really did it for him was when Leo took Kate's hand and kissed it from across the table. He got up and quickly left the restaurant. He just couldn't stand watching his ex-wife being that happy with her best friend, but he  couldn't help but watch them through the window.
After a while, Leo and Kate got up to leave. Seeing Leo kissing Kate one their way to the door,  drove Ned crazy. He was intend on talking to them, especially to Kate.

Kate's POV

When we came outside the restaurant, someone pulled my arm roughly. I looked up in shock to see Ned. "Well, now I know why you got over me that quickly!", he said angrily. "Don't you dare touch her! I swear, if you hurt her, I'll hurt you!", Leo said angrily. Ned let go of me and moved one step closer to Leo. "She means something to me that she's obviously never meant to you!", Leo said, protectively wrapping his arm around me. I wanted to say something to avoid a fight, but Ned interrupted me. "Oh shut up, Leo! Who do you think you are anyway? Do you really think you could just come in here and take over and try to be my son's father?"  There was a lot of  jealousy in his voice. "Ned, please, we're all adults. We can clear this up like adults.", I said, trying to calm him down. But it was pointless. He just kept yelling, "You picked the wrong guy. What were you thinking? That you two will grow old together? That he won't hurt you?"  I was on the verge of crying already. "Listen to me, you better shut the fuck up and leave her alone!", Leo cut in, with a dangerously quiet voice. "What if I don't? What will you do then? Will you beat me up?!", Ned yelled at Leo. It became too much for me to handle. I couldn't help but cry now. "Please stop! Both of you!", I begged them. I could see that Leo felt sorry, but Ned kept ignoring what I said.  "Let me tell you something, you'll end up all on your own,  without your beloved best friend being there for you.", he continued. Leo gave him a cold look and turned to me. "Katie, don't listen to him. He doesn't know what he's talking about. I would never hurt you!", he said softly,  carressing my cheek. I gazed into space, trying to clear my mind. It was hopeless. "You made the biggest mistake in your life!", Ned said, making me feel even worse.

He kept talking to me insistently while Leo tried to comfort me. Their voices became more and more blurry. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. Then I pushed Leo's hand off my face and turned around. I ran away, I didn't care where I was going. I had to find  some place where I could be on my own for a while and just think.
