VANI POV

67 percent vampire. 67 percent not human.

But... how? If I'm not human, how have I not known until now?

"Well, they say that you don't show the signs until you're 20 or so. But the medicine triggers it earlier."

I hadn't even realised I had said it out loud.

I swallow. "Why couldn't they wait? Why now?"

Mom looks at me sypathetically. I bristle. I don't want, or need anyone's pity right now. What I need is answers.

"Because, sweetie, such an abrupt change... you might hurt someone, or yourself. It's better to do it under profesional supervision." She explains.

I let out a breath. Okay. Fine.

"Okay. I want to know what's gonna happen to me."

"Well, like I said, you'd be sent to that boarding school. They told me its a nice one, away from the city, it's for all species, you know. Well, except us. But you can make friends there. Really, it'd be good."

Ha. Trust Mom to find a positive side.

"Yiu'll also have a guardian," she continues. "He knows a lot, and is also a vampire. He'll take care of you. He's very nice too."

"Oh?" I raise my eyebrow. "You've met him? How long was I even out?"

I can't believe that question never occurred to me. Too much things on my mind, I suppose.

"Um... a week."

...

"WHAT??!!!"

"I knew you'd react like this," she says meekly.

I sit back on the bed, letting out a breath. A week.

"Oh, the nurse is here. By, sweetie. I expect yiu'll be discharged soon."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"Really? Cause it doesn't sound safe."

"Just do it." The nuse sighs.

I stare at the wooden clip warily like it might jump up and attack me at any time.

Apparently, I couldn't go outside because I might go on a 'blood craze'. So her brilliant solution is to use the wooden peg so I can't breathe.

Which sounded great to me, except the I can't breathe part of it. But I guess if she says so, then she says so.

But I'm putting it on record here that if I pass out, it totally isn't my fault.

It feels kinda weird, not breathing. Worse is knowing I now don't really need to. But it's only for a little while, until I meet my guardian, who, I heard, was a complete loner until he volunteered for this. I dunno why, though.

My new boarding school is on its own island. Yeah, that's really 'away from the city'.

There's a black car waiting for me. I know because it has a huge sign on top, hot pink with sparkly words, "Welcome, Vani!"

I knock on the door and hear the click. I slide in and see my guardian for the first time.

...

He blinks. I blink. He blinks again.

"I... I don't understand." He says, confused. His voice is hoarse, whispery. "They said you were mentally sound."

"Excuse me?" I snap, my voice weird because of the peg. "Are you calling me crazy?"

He looks startled. "Why, you understand me! HELLO. I. AM. VICTOR. I. AM. YOUR. GUARDIAN. IT. IS. NICE. TO. MEET. YOU."

"HELLO. VICTOR." I yell back. "IT. IS. NICE. TO. MEET. YOU. TOO."

Now the poor guy just looks confused.

"I. AM. GLAD. YOU. FEEL. THAT. WAY. YOU. WILL. BE. LIVING. WITH. ME. WHILE. WE. ENROLL. YOU. IN. YOUR. SCHOOL. MY. HOME. IS. YOUR. HOME. WE. WILL. BE. MOVING. NOW."

Oh, gosh, I have a nutcase for a guardian.

"BUT. WHAT. ABOUT. MY. THINGS?"

"YOUR. MOTHER. HAS. PACKED. ESSENTIALS. FOR. YOU. THE. REST. WILL. BE. PROVIDED."

"OKAY. GOT. IT."

Seriously, my voice will be gone before I even get to school.

I yank off the peg, perhaps a bit too hard. "Ow," I rub my nose.

Victor looks at me worriedly.

"ARE. YOU. ALRIGHT."

Oh my god.

"YES. I. AM. FINE. PLEASE. KEEP. YOUR. EYES. ON. THE. ROAD. WHEN. YOU. ARE. DRIVING."

Victor quickly looks at the road. I heave a sigh.

Nice, huh, Mom?

Hi.

So it's not as long as last time, but I hope it's funny.

Tell me, did I make you smile?
