Much, much later, after we were scrubbed clean of all the dirt and grime of the battle, I was laying on my back in the middle of Clay's bed, staring up at the ceiling whilst I waited for him to return from the bathroom. My fingers ran over my arms as I tried to shake the phantom feeling of his hands on me, helping me to clean the blood and dirt from my skin. It had been one of those times where he'd barely let me do anything for myself, and again, there was nothing but pure intentions in the gentle way his fingers pushed and pulled at my body, removing my clothes, and cleaning my hair and skin, before pulling on a clean pair of shorts and a soft hoodie that was too big for me. These moments were so soft, and filled me with warmth, but also with a desperation for more than he was giving me. I didn't want it to be innocent anymore. I wanted him to kiss me.

My eyes followed him as the door to the bathroom finally opened, and he stepped through, switching off its light and closing the door behind him. He smiled upon meeting my gaze, and I felt the bed dip as he sat down beside me, moving a hand to run it through my hair, still slightly damp from the water.

"Are you okay?" I asked him. "What happened after I left you with Alex and Karl?"

Clay sighed, and shook his head.

"I didn't have much choice," he said. "I had to fight off Karl, which I won't lie to you, was pretty easy, but I wasn't quick enough before Alex was digging that knife into George. I'm not kidding when I tell you I saw red. I swear if anyone touches the three of you - George, Sap, yourself... it drives me crazy, Alexa. I care about you so much, all of you, and I feel so responsible when any of you get hurt."

I smiled at the determination in his eyes, barely noticing his other hand running down my arm until our fingers connected and intertwined with one another.

"I feel it too, Clay. You don't know how hard it was to leave you to go and rescue Sap. But... it's Sapnap, he's my best friend, I don't think I could have done it for anyone else, and if you hadn't ordered me to I probably wouldn't have gone."

Clay chuckled.

"Sapnap's your best friend? What does that make me?"

I rolled my eyes at him.

"Clay, come on."

"What? I'm asking you. Who am I to you?"

I felt my heart begin to beat harder in my chest.

"Is that an order too?" I asked.

I was unprepared for his hand to leave my hair, a finger trailing down my cheek before gripping my chin possessively.

"Yes," he stated, his emerald gaze heavy on my skin.

"You're much more important to me than being just a friend," I sighed. "I thought you knew this."

Clay's eyes darkened, and he tilted his head towards me. For a moment I thought he was actually going to kiss me, but instead his lips re-directed towards my forehead, my skin burning up at the contact. He released his grip on my chin to tuck a strand of blonde hair behind my ear, before his fingers returned to the top of my head once more.
