"You're a real force to be reckoned with, and I have so much respect for how you handle yourself. But for some reason... I'm the exception."

Dream was in no mood to be taking anything seriously that day, and accordingly, he was sitting sideways on his throne in his dumb green hoodie and ripped jeans, playing paper scissors rock with George at the moment when Sam entered the throne room. The castle guards, particularly those who guarded the throne room, were the best that we had - they were a solemn, serious bunch who took their job seriously, and that was a good thing because they had a serious job to do. However, even they were struggling to keep a straight face at the king and his bodyguard's childish antics.
"If you two are quite finished," I interrupted the two of them, and Dream turned to see that Sam was waiting for him awkwardly. He grinned at me cheekily, before swivelling his legs around to sit properly on his throne, and suddenly he was really the king again. It was as though a switch had been flipped inside of him.
"Sam," he nodded to him, as solemn as a judge now. "I trust you are well after yesterday?"
"I'm perfectly fine, your majesty," said Sam. "Punz said you wanted to talk to me about Aipha?"
"I do," said Dream. "First things first, where is he at the moment?"
"He should be here soon your majesty," said Punz, "I asked someone to fetch him from the army base after Sam."
"Good," said Dream. "Sam, I wanted to ask you... you seem to know Aipha fairly well, but I take it you don't get along?"
"No, your majesty," Sam shook his head a little ruefully. "He can't follow orders at all. He runs off by himself with his soldiers, and I never know where he is. He rarely does anything stupid, but he never tells me what he's planning on doing until it's already done, and I can't work with that when I'm expecting him to be somewhere else. The rest of the army have to pick up the slack because he and his soldiers are MIA."
Dream seemed to brood on this information for a moment.
"I want you to know I'm not telling you you're wrong, Sam - I hear glowing reports of you from Punz, but I'm just trying to understand where Aipha is coming from. If he takes his subordinates with him, they must place a lot of trust in his capabilities, yes?"
Sam reluctantly agreed.
"I guess that's true," he stated.
"I think he's in the wrong position," said Dream. "If I were to take him and a few of his subordinates out of the army for the foreseeable future, do you think you could easily replace them?"
Sam's eyes widened, and he nodded eagerly.
"There's a young woman named Gumi who we've wanted to give a leadership role to for a while, and to be honest, your majesty, apart from the contingent who defected to L'Manburg, our people are loyal to the throne. There are plenty of willing soldiers."
Dream smiled at him, and nodded thoughtfully.
"Okay. Thank you, Sam. Offer Gumi the role. I've got something better to give Aipha that's more suited to his capabilities."
