Wind tore pieces of hair from my helmet, whipping it across my cheeks that were tinted red from the cold. There were six of us walking together, each dressed in gleaming enchanted netherite. We were headed towards the entrance to the tunnels under L'Manburg, tunnels which had become somewhat of a rabbit warren over the course of the war. It was a war I hadn't seen much of - at least, not in person. It was eye opening to be here now, and see the destruction first hand. When I'd visited Wilbur at the walls a few months ago, there had been burnt carcasses of trees, and an eerie stillness in the air. Things had escalated since then, and there were scorch marks lining the walls of the tunnels, cracked stone providing evidence of a fire. Some of the tunnels had caved in due to canon fire, and the landscape was scattered with craters. It made me shiver from more than just the cold, and I wondered how many of our own had died in this place. Dream's hand holding my own was a welcome source of warmth, and he glanced towards me as I squeezed it a little tighter, offering me a slight smile.
It was almost a relief to enter the underground tunnels, and escape the cold wind. Punz and Sam led the way down the rabbit warren, seeming to know the twists and turns by heart. Sam was the chief of the army's second in command, and he would be left in charge today whilst Punz was busy elsewhere. Today was the day of the L'Manburg election, and consequently, the day we kidnapped the newly elected president and stole the discs. Members of the army hurried by us, eyes widening in respectful awe upon seeing who was with their chief, and bowing their heads respectfully.
Punz halted at a fork in the tunnels, and turned to look at the rest of us.
"This is it," he stated, as five sets of eyes looked at him expectantly. "We all know what to do, right? Sam, hopefully the army doesn't need to be involved, but you'll be ready if it's required?"
The blonde nodded.
"I'm ready."
"Okay," stated Punz, breathing out heavily. "Dream?"
I felt the taller blonde's hand tighten just a fraction at the mention of his name, and I could guess why. We had to part ways for this, and he didn't want to let go of me. This wasn't safe, and we all knew it, but if we could pull this off it would save us from losing many more lives in battle. This was a mission that couldn't be entrusted to anyone else, it was something we needed to do ourselves.
"Lets do it," he nodded, a note of determination creeping into his voice. "Which way do we have to go, Punz?"
"You and George go to the right," said Punz.
"I had two soldiers wait at the end for you," added Sam. "They have contact with me, and I have contact with Punz. They'll let you know when to go up the ladder. It'll lead you right to the platform where they're announcing the results of the election. Once Sapnap and I have got the rings, we'll let you know to join us up there so we can give them to you."
"Okay," Dream nodded. He still had not released my hand, and I turned to see he was already looking at me. "Don't get hurt, Lex," he muttered, suddenly pulling me closer and wrapping both his arms around me. My head fell to his chest automatically, and I relaxed into his embrace, wrapping my own arms around him and squeezing tightly.
