"So I understand that Emma hasn't had the easiest of times at school?" Laura says looking at her computer
"She was bullied at her last school and she didn't cope well with it! Her confidence dropped dramatically and she couldn't find it in her to be happy so I knew I had to do something about it!" Casey says as he smiles
"I'm so sorry she had to go through that! No child should ever have to go through that! And what about your wife? What does she think?" Laura asks
"Oh Umm I had Emma young! 18 to be exact! Me and her mom just didn't work out so she left and left Emma behind too! So I had to grow up and take care of her" Casey says as he shifts uncomfortably
"Oh I'm sorry! I didn't mean to" Laura says awkwardly
"Oh no! It's fine! That was 10 years ago now!" Casey says as he smiles reassuringly
"Well I can assure you that Emma is going to be in safe hands here! And I want her to know that I'm always here to help her! And for you as well! I understand how hard it is to be a single parent let alone with a time consuming job!" Laura says smiling
"We get there! But thank you so much!" Matt says as he shakes her hand and walks out
It's the next day and Emma is due to be in Laura's class
"Mike?" Laura calls out
"Here!" Mike shouts
"Caroline?" Laura shouts
"I'm here miss!" Caroline shouts
Laura goes through the register until she gets to Emma's name
"Emma?" Laura calls out
But no one responds. Laura finish's the register and gives the class their assignments. 10 minutes later Emma walks in
"I'm so sorry Miss Russell! I was late and then I didn't know where I was going and" Emma says in a panic
"Hey! Don't worry about it! Take your stuff off and come in!" Laura says smiling
"Why does Miss Russell give her special treatment?" Mike says annoyed
"Yeah! I get that she's new but come on!" Caroline says
"Mike! Caroline! I suggest that you both get back to your work because not only are you failing my class but your also gossiping about a student when I have told you both not to talk!" Laura shouts
"Sorry miss!" Mike says picking up his pencil
"Yeah sorry!" Caroline says as she gets back to her work
The rest of the day goes by until it's after school and Laura is doing work in her classroom. When she spots someone spying at her door
"Emma?" Laura asks confused
"Sorry to bother you miss-" Emma says but Laura stops her
"Your not bothering me at all! Now what's going on?" Laura asks swinging around in her chair
"I Umm didn't know where my locker was and I went to look for it but I kinda Umm missed my bus! And my dads at work so I can't get home!" Emma says in a panic
"Okay! Come on!" Laura says getting up
"Huh?" Emma asks confused
"I'll drive you to your dads firehouse!" Laura says grabbing her keys and walking out
They drive to the firehouse and Laura walks up with Emma. They see Kelly at the top of the driveway
"Uncle Kelly!" Emma shouts
"Hey kiddo! Who's this?" Kelly asks
"This is Miss Russell! She drove me here because I missed my bus!" Emma says smiling
"The famous Miss Russell! Well it's a pleasure! I'm Kelly!" Kelly says shaking her hand as Casey walks out
"Laura?" Casey asks
"Sorry! Miss Emma here missed her bus and I gave her a ride! I really need to get going but here's my number so I can give you the heads up next time!" Laura says as she passes a piece of paper to Casey and walks away
Emma runs into the firehouse leaving Kelly and Casey
"Oooo! Her number! She must really like you! Laura Casey! Has a nice ring to it!" Kelly says as he laughs
