"What the-" Hyewun stood there shocked
But it couldn't be, she saw Jake in front of her clear as day on the rooftop. Was someone playing a trick on her? Hyewun again walked home in shock as she couldn't stop thinking about the newspaper article in her hand. Suddenly Hyewun bumped into someone causing her to slightly stumble back.
"Oh sorry!" The voice called out
Hyewun looked up to see a young man with black hair who couldn't be too much older than her, only a few years.
"Ah it's fine! I wasn't looking where I was going" Hyewun quickly replied
They quickly bowed to each other when the article that was in Hyewun's hands fell to the ground. The man quickly bent down to pick it up but when he saw what was on the cover, he froze.
"Thanks- oh is something wrong?" Hyewun asked as she quickly noticed the change in the man's mood
"Where'd you get this?" the man asked
"I found it on the ground why?" Hyewun replied
"Nevermind, sorry for bothering you" the man said before quickly giving Hyewun the article and walking away
"Strange" Hyewun thought as she looked back at the man who was hurriedly walking away from her
Hyewun shook it off as she also began walking the opposite way. Suddenly she heard her name being called from behind her. Hyewun looked behind her and saw the owner of the voice.
"Sunoo!" Hyewun yelled as she waved at him
Hyewun waited for Sunoo to run and catch up to her.
"What are you doing at the school so late? You're usually the first ones out" Hyewun laughed
"The teacher held me back because I had to help tutor someone" Sunoo said
"Man am I tired" he yawned
"Oh so you're smart too" Hyewun laughed
"I know someone who needs tutoring" Hyewun mumbled to herself as she thought about Jake
"Hm?' Sunoo asked as he looked at Hyewun
"Oh nothing" Hyewun said
"What're you holding?" Sunoo asked as he looked at the piece of paper
"I don't really know I found this outside of the school and it was written all the way back in 2017" Hyewun said
Hyewun handed over the article for Sunoo to see.
"WOahh no way" Sunoo said as he read the headlines
"Was the education so cruel that they made a student kill himself?" Sunoo asked
Hyewun shrugged.
"But did you know him?" Hyewun asked
"Nope but I do want to know more about this case, maybe I can about this as a topic for my report" Sunoo said
"It'll be about how harsh the school system is" Sunoo said
"I mean I guess I wanna know more about this too" Hyewun said
"Wanna come to my house? I'm sure my mom would want to meet you too" Hyewun said
"Sure!" Sunoo said
Sunoo and Hyewun walked the rest of the way to Hyewun's house while talking about random topics they both found interest in.
Hyewun's house: "Mom! I'm home!" Hyewun yelled
Her mom rushed out of the kitchen carrying a plate of snacks.
"Hyewun! I made you some snacks!" Mrs. Kang said
"Oh! You didn't tell you were having guest over" Mrs. Kang smiled
Sunoo bowed before introducing himself.
"Nice to meet you Sunoo!" Mrs. Kang exclaimed
"Thanks mom for the snacks" Hyewun said
"Yes thank you Mrs. Kang!" Sunoo said
Sunoo and Hyewun sat down on the couch and pulled out their computers.
"So when was this article written?" Sunoo asked
"March 15th, 2017" Hyewun said
"So you found it exactly 4 years after it was written?" Sunoo said
Hyewun nodded.
"Spooky" Sunoo said
"You know what's even more spooky?" Hyewun said
"You better not jumpscare me" Sunoo said glaring at Hyewun
"No I was about to say that the guy who died looks familiar" Hyewun said
"What?" Sunoo asked in shock
"Yeah I don't want to assume anything yet but he looks oddly familiar to someone I've talked to recently" Hyewun said
"Ok now you're just confusing me" Sunoo said
"Forget I said that" Hyewun said shaking her head
Sunoo let it go as he continued looking on his computer.
Hyewun typed in "Keumjeong High School student suicide"
Hyewun scrolled through endless suicide prevention articles written by the school until she came across one that seemed to catch her eye.
"Male student age 18 commits suicide on school grounds" Hyewun looked at the date it was written and sure enough it was written March 2017
"I think I found something!" Hyewun said
Sunoo stopped what he was doing and scooted next to Hyewun on he couch.
"A student by the name of Jake Sim, commits suicide by jumping off Keumjeong High School's rooftop" Sunoo starts reading off the article
"Jake was well known and loved among his peers, he was captain of the soccer team and ranked top of his classes, but in a note Jake left behind before his death he said that school was so harsh to the point where he would spend endless nights sleepless and studying" Sunoo read
The room was silent.
"So this is what happened?" Hyewun said in disbelief
"This is why they changed up the exam schedules so much" Hyewun said
"So it took someone's life to make the school system realize how harsh they were?" Sunoo spat out angrily
"I gotta go" Hyewun said as realization hit her
"What? Where?" Sunoo said
He stood up as he followed her out the door. Hyewun ran out the door and started heading towards the school. Sunoo had no choice but to run after her. Finally Hyewun reached the school as she ran through the doors. The school was basically empty so Hyewun had no problem running down the halls too the rooftop.
Hyewun burst through the door of the rooftop once again.
"Hyewun you gotta stop scaring me like this" Jake said as he saw Hyewun out of breath for the second time that day
Hyewun stopped to take a breather before continuing.
"You're dead aren't you" Hyewun said as she held up the newspaper article
