Making social experiments work is hard. And the hardest part about it is making it realistic. There are several ways that realism affect it, but the hardest of those is making the people involved think it's real, and not just be acting.

As we have seen with the labyrinth, and certainly the return to normality afterwards, most  subjects seemed furious at the thought of it all being, in their opinion, a lie. And it's impossible to get good results with this kind of attitude, either because they try and vandalize the environment, fake their emotions, or because they refuse to take part in it with the knowledge that it is something they're taking part in.

There are several things we do to try and enable a realism to our experiments. Our most common one is via amnesia, but in some cases, where we have to start things very quickly or an experiment fails, there is only one way make it realistic.

Let the subjects believe they've already escaped.
