Casey peeled the stupid candy striper smock off from over her clothes. It was an embarrassing seersucker white and pink striped thing that was part apron part tutu. Ok maybe the tutu part was an exaggeration. But she did have to wear white tights, white leggings OR slim fitting white pants underneath. That was the dress code for teenage volunteers at the hospital Elsa was making her volunteer at twice a week.

"It'll be good for your college applications Casey," she had said.

"It will feel so good to help out those less fortunate than you Casey," she had also said.

Casey imagined Elsa's loving, needling, preachy voice as she thought about it. Casey didn't understand what answering phones and directing visitors to their sick loved ones' hospital rooms would do for her college applications that being a track star wouldn't.

But Casey wouldn't let even hospital volunteering get her spirits down today. After tearing off her offensive white leggings, balling them up and cramming them into her bag she quickly pulled on her jean shorts and headed out to the parking lot. If traffic was good she'd have just enough time to surprise Izzie at work and drive her home. Then maybe Izzie would let her hang out for a while and if that went well, and Sasha wasn't in total psycho mode, maybe they could sneak off to Izzie's room for a while and make out. She grinned and pressed her lips together at the thought.

It had been disappointing not seeing Izzie more often this summer. As their junior year had come to a close Casey had pictured a summer of long days at the pool, mid afternoon movies, pizza dinners at Dons, slushies, running together, hanging out with their friends, sleepovers (G rated and otherwise.) When the reality of Izzie's job and home responsibilities set in, shortly after their junior year ended, Casey had been furious. Not with Izzie, but with the situation. Of course she didn't exactly handle it well in her frustrated conversation with Izzie. She had stormed into the house, hot headed and thoughts swirling, slamming the door behind her and kicking a shoe across the room in frustration.

"Everything ok?" Elsa had asked, knowingly, from where she sat on the couch next to a laundry basket piled with neat stacks of clothes.

"Fine," Casey deadpanned.

Elsa just gazed back, a folded washcloth in hand, with that very Elsa expression. The one where it was clear she already thought she knew exactly what was wrong and was just hoping and praying that Casey would ask for her help or advice. Casey turned away and began stomping up the stairs.

Then she stopped. Turned back.

"It's just-"

Casey couldn't believe she was about to confide in Elsa. Her mother waited with baited breath.

"Izzie's gonna be working like a million hours a week all summer and taking care of her siblings and I'm never gonna see her," she had sighed, dramatically.

Elsa had looked at her with so much compassion and set the basket on the floor.

"Oh, honey... Come sit with me?"

Casey had begrudgingly gone over and slumped down onto the couch with a sigh. Elsa rubbed her shoulder and brushed hair out of her face. Casey didn't love that, but she didn't hate it so she allowed it.

"Izzie has a lot on her plate. She has to think about things that you never do-"

"I know that, ok? I'm not mad at her. I'm just..." Casey sighed again, buried her face in her hands, "Disappointed. I mean..." She struggled to find the words, "...it's not fair. She shouldn't have to do everything she does. Her life sucks so much and mine's, like, great and... it's not fair."
