In Sherlock's early childhood, his family would move around. At one point, they lived in a townhouse next to a solitary young woman. During one of may loud, physical fights between Sherlock's parents, he left the house and ended up at her doorstep. Instead of sending him back, she allowed him in and let him read from her bookshelves until all became quiet again in the next house. It became Sherlock's habit to visit her every time his parents rowed. Years later, he returned the favor by making certain that her husband, an abusive, tyrannical man, was executed. By then, Sherlock had developed a cold, detached persona, Mrs. Hudson never indicated she knew him any other way.
