Since Sherlock was a light sleeper, he would oftren be awoken if he could hear John moving about when he suffered from nightmares. Sherlock would then start playing his violin until John would wake up. After his 'death', John found a music sheet simply entitled "John's lament," learning how to read music at school, John sang the notes under his breath and then realized why Sherlock would play the same song almsot every night for so long. It was for John.
