The Grimm's fairytale was Sherlock's favorite childhood book. Moriarty had learned this through Mycroft, and had made allusions to the stories throughout the TRF deliberately. This served the purpose of a dealing a duel blow to Sherlock; by referencing his childhood, and letting him know that Mycroft must have betrayed him. This is why Sherlock refused to come to him for help, and how Mycroft knew that Sherlock would never accept any help he offered. This too was an intended effect bu Moriarty.
