vacation.
three syllables,
each filled with more bliss than the last.
it was exactly the kind of gift y/n l/n needed,
especially since this last school year had almost burned her out completely.
being far away from home in a place of warm weather, cool beaches, and entertainment was the perfect escape from drama, school, and the tediousness of life.
paradise on earth,
the outerbanks.
y/n had heard from her parents,
time and time again,
that their hometown had been fun to visit,
but never to live in.
which is why they moved the first chance they got and raised y/n in a big town full of big opportunities.
it only led her to feeling out of place,
but she figured it was better than being cramped in some small town.
but no matter,
vacation.
that one word filled her with an excitement that couldn't be contained as she sat still for a plane ride.
when the plane finally landed and allowed y/n to board off,
she was riled with elation.
though her parents chided her and told her to relax in the car ride to their hotel,
she didn't pay it a bit of mind.
she figured maybe they were anxious about visiting their hometown after years away.
y/n realized she'd be panicked too.
so she quieted herself and stifled all the joy waiting to be unleashed when her feet hit the water.
sweet serenity.
she couldn't wait.

until she was forced to wait.
much to her luck,
the downpour that happened only once out of the year in the outerbanks,
happened today.
but y/n took this as no disadvantage,
this meant a shopping day.
and maybe,
if she didn't splurge on clothing too much,
she could buy herself a cup of coffee that was entirely too expensive for its quality;
the best kind of coffee,
she believes.
y/n made herself busy in the racks of a thrift shop when she looked up to see a girl around her age standing in front of her.
"sorry, i don't mean to stare,"
the girl said with a laugh.
"i just really love your top. where did you get it?"
y/n looked down at her shirt and began racking her mind for the place of purchase.
"a thrift store back home, i think? here, check the tag. it might tell you."
y/n turned her back and flipped up the collar of her shirt so that the girl could see.
she heard a soft giggle leave from her onlookers mouth.
"oh! it's miu miu! wow. you found this in a thrift store?"
"it's amazing what people will give away, right?"
the girl nodded her head full of curls in agreement then laughed.
"absolutely right. i'm kie, by the way."
"y/n. it's nice to meet you, kie."
"you, too. so, where's back home?"
when y/n relayed her birth place to kie,
she stopped short in her tracks.
the abrupt sound of hangers scratching against the metal rods of the rack made y/n wince.
"holy shit. you're y/n l/n. like, l/n family y/n."
"huh? oh, yeah. how-how did you know?"
"dude,"
kie began laughing at the ignorance towards the l/n fame,
especially in the outerbanks.
"you're, like, loaded. the only reason this island was kept afloat at one point was because of your parents donations. also,"
she lowered her voice for this next part,
"rumor has it your mom was in some torrid affair years ago."
"what?"
y/n exclaimed with the shake of her head.
"no way. my mom? that's not right"
"like i said, rumors. i have no idea what's true or not. my mom and your mom went to school together."
y/n continued looking through the racks of clothing without saying another word.
she was letting this information soak within her,
but it wouldn't settle.
that didn't sound like her mother.
her mother was notorious for being a stick in the mud.
an affair?
that didn't even sound right in the same sentence as her mothers name.
"so, do y'all go to, like, paris and stuff for vacation?"
"no, this is the first vacation i've had."
kie raised her eyebrows.
"really? no greece, hawaii, spain, nothing?"
"nope."
"huh..."
kie was eyeing y/n from over the clothing,
examining her for that arrogance that often followed rich people.
and if anyone were to have it,
it'd be the l/n family.
but kie couldn't find any traces of it.
it seemed y/n was wiped completely of any ego provided from family money.
she was humble, sweet, and shopped at thrift stores.
kie might never understand.
"you're cool. i like being around you."
y/n looked up from a shirt she'd been looking at and gave kie a smile.
"thank you. the feelings mutual."
"even though i told you about your moms rumored reputation?"
y/n tried to stifle her laugh then said,
"it's better i know now. thank you."
"huh...well, you didn't hear it from me."
kie tossed y/n a wink then began heading for the exit door,
having found nothing other than friendship in y/n.
but before she left,
y/n called out her name and watched as she stood still in response.
"do-do you want to get some coffee?"
kie smiled and waved her hand.
"of course. come on, i know just the place."
y/n and kie then ran through the rain with laughs loud from their lips to harmonize with the sounds of raindrops hitting then sinking into their clothing.
when they finally found refuge in the coffee shop,
y/n instantly felt the chill on her skin ebb away.
the coffee bean scent lingering in the air warmed her,
inside and out,
and brought her a sense of normality that would never waver.
coffee shops were worldwide,
always there and always providing;
a homestead in places of unfamiliarity.
the pair got their drinks then sat in the corner of the shop where they could talk over the low ambiance of music.
"do you mind if i invite some friends? they're, like, literal dogs. got some kind of separation anxiety or something,"
kie explained with a laugh.
y/n felt her usual shyness overcome her as she answered,
"oh, yeah. that's good!"
she figured her and kie had become quick friends by some string of luck,
but having to impress and charm other friends of hers wasn't a challenge y/n was sure she was up for.
coupled with her apparently known family name,
she was beginning to feel a shred of regret for complying.
but it was too late to change her mind and too late to excuse her way out of here.
y/n was stuck.
stuck frozen to her seat in nervous anticipation.
"hey, you don't have to worry. the boys are really nice. boisterous, but nice."
y/n forced herself to swallow the coffee in her cup,
maybe to warm herself all over again or dampen her drying throat,
then gave kie a reassuring smile.
boys.
they were teenage boys.
the only boys y/n had ever hung out with were either all patronizing or paid her no mind,
unless they needed to score points with her girl friends, of course.
this was an entire leap from her comfort zone and it made her internally freeze.
kie noticed y/n's rigid stance from across the table and the way her shoulders tensed.
there was a deeper understanding in that one position she remained in,
so kie pulled her phone out and texted her friends saying,
