Gran was never hard to find. She knew English, but because of her accent, she was hard to understand, so she spent most of her time in the back garden alone.
"Hi, Gran." Lysander said.
"Guten tag, Lysander." (meaning: good afternoon, Lysander) Sabrina said, her voice rich and low, "Was bringt Sie hier raus?" (meaning What brings you out here)
Lysander felt his cheeks burn with embarrassment. What if Gran didn't want to talk about her eldest son?
"Gran, kannst du uns mehr über Onkel Gunther erzählen?" (meaning: Gran, can you tell us more about Uncle Gunther) Erika asked.
Sabrina's face changed from what was sunny and happy, to grim and sad.
"Nur wenn Sie möchten." (meaning: Only is you want to) Erika added quickly.
Sabrina nodded and took a deep breath, "Gunther, mein Sohn, war eine Freude. Er war so ein guter Bruder." (meaning: Gunther, my son, was a delight. He was such a good brother) Erika translated for Lily, who had been watching the interaction between Erika and Sabrina lost and confused, "Die Schlacht kostete viele Menschenleben; Gunther war einer von ihnen." (meaning: The Battle took many lives; Gunther was one of them) Erika translated again, "Gally, Rolf, und ich waren untröstlich, es fühlte sich an, als hätten wir uns mit ihm verloren." (meaning: Gally, Rolf, and I were heartbroken, it felt like we lost ourselves with him) Erika translated that part, too. Lily looked to Sabrina and said,
"I'm sorry about your son, Mrs. Scamander."
Sabrina smiled and patted Lily's hand. She then looked to Lysander and asked,
"Seid ihr schon zwei dating?" (meaning: are you two dating yet)
Lysander shook his head and said in mediocre German, "Wir sind nur Freunde, Oma." (meaning: we're just friends, Gran)
Sabrina nodded and walked away, but Lysander could've sworn she added-
"Verleugnung ist eine mächtige Sache." (meaning: denial is a powerful thing)
