            SAMANTHA'S POV

"Matter is anything that has inertia and occupies physical space. Examples are rocks, oceans, air, animal, plant and so on," I read aloud. Anna lifts her head and meet my gaze.

"Wait! You are actually reading?"

"No oo! I'm playing. Mtchew!"

"Ah! Wow! Oya continue na. Serious student. Read! I like that"

I nod and flip the Chemistry textbook in front of me. "The atom is the smallest unit that defines the chemical elements and their isotopes".

"But why are you reading the words out? This is a library oo. Read in your mind"

"Can you mind your business?" I hiss. I flip the pages of the book some more. "Electron affinity of an element E is defined as the energy change that occurs when an electron is added to a gaseous atom".

"Hmm...I'm proud of you"

"Proud of who?"

"You na"

"Me? Oh! Guess what! I just gave up now," I say and flip the pages. The excessive words and formulas are a huge discouragement to me and I shut the book with a loud thud. I try to carry it with one hand and that's when I realized how heavy it was.

"Why did you give up?"

"How will I know everything about science before the quiz?"

"Oh! You are reading for the science quiz? I thought you were reading for your WAEC?"

"I will read for that one later. Na science quiz I dey think of. Daniel must not win"

"Forget about it. He will win. He has won so many of that kind of competition. I don't know why you did such a bet with him. Where was your sense?"

"Are you asking me?" I grumble and rub my face. I shut my eyes and take in a deep breath. Just when I open my eyes, I see a familiar face pass by. "Hey, Tolu. Please come".

The boy freezes in his movement. He stands still for a moment before turning to face me. "Me?"

"Yes! Please come"

He raises a brow at me. "Me?"

"What is your problem?" I hiss out.

"For goodness sake, Sammy, this is a library. And what do you want to do with the boy?"

I smirk and rise from my seat. "Nothing much".

Tolu is one of the best students in our school and the second best science student in my class. A mischievous smirk is on my face as I make my way to him. "Come with me," I whisper to him and head to the bookshelves. I go behind one of them and wait for him. He timidly walks in. "How are you?" I ask.

He jabs his chest with his thumb. "Me?"

"Ode! Is there anyone else here? How are you?" I snap and he flinches, his brows rising in horror. He glances behind himself as though planning his escape and looks back at me.

"I'm fine," he replies.

"Good boy," my lips curve into a smirk. "How's reading going?"

"Fine"

"Did you join the science quiz for Students' week?"

"No!"

"Why?"

"My registration form came late so they couldn't pick me"

I slouch my shoulder and heave a sigh in pity. "Awwn! Sorry. An intelligent boy like you got rejected. Chai".

"Can I...I...I go?" he stutters and points to freedom. I narrow my eyes at him and his hand drops. "Is there something... some... something you want from me?"

"Wow! You are such a gentleman. Why, yes boy! I have a job for you. Won't you ask me what it is?"

"W.. w..what is it?" his lips quiver as he tries to meet my piercing gaze.

"Something simple. Just read hard. You have a science quiz to win," I punch his shoulder lightly and my loud laughter echoes in the library.

"Who is that?" A gravelly voice yells and my mouth is sealed at once.

"Go and read," I order the boy and stride off.

"Sam," Anna scowls. "What did you do to that boy?"

"Nothing!" I shrug. "I just gave him a job to do".

"What job?"

"Hmm...You worry too much. Just rest"

"Sam, answer me"

"Just watch. Everything will make sense soon, Anna"

"Samantha, I'm warning you. Don't go and cheat in that competition oo"

"Rest!" I hiss out and walk away.

                   *********

I force my face cap down my hair  and wear my sunglasses. "I'll be back," I tell my driver and slide out of the car.

Sometimes, you just need to take the wheel in your own hands. That is how I reason. I'm not perfect and I know I'm not the best role model. Wetin concern me? Na to live a happy life I want.

I scan everywhere before entering the pharmacy. The receptionist greets me with a bob of her head and I reply, "Good evening".

"What can we do for you?"

"I want to get a drug"

"Okay?"

"Not a harmful one oo. I just need something that if you take it without doctor's prescription can cause you stomach ache?"

Her eyes go round. "What do you want to do with it?"

"My chemistry teacher said I should get it and write an essay on it," I reply with a meek smile. My face shines with innocence as I look around the shop. "Do you have it?"

"He didn't tell you the name of the drug?"

"No!"

"Hmm...Let me ask the pharmacist"

"Please oo! The drug shouldn't be deadly. Just a little stomach ache"

The woman raises a brow at me and does a double take of me.

"That's what my teacher asked for," I add.

She nods and goes through a door. I sigh in relief. I didn't even know I was holding my breath during our talk. The woman  returns with a paper in hand and begins to search the shelves in the shop. She hands the drug to me and says, "It shouldn't be taken on an empty stomach. It will cause pain but the pain will subside when you've eaten and taken enough water".

She pronounce the name of the drug but at that point, I wasn't listening. I take the drug and leave the shop immediately.

I must win this quiz by all means.
