SAMANTHA's POVI pick up the paper with my plans for the day and read the first task: Meet Daniel during lunch break after he eats. I don't want to make him lose his appetite, so that's great timing. I groan and slam my palm on my forehead. "How can I accomplish anything when Daniel isn't in school?" I mumble under my breath and peer at Boma. "Anna, should I ask him?"
Anna follows my gaze and sees Boma shoving spaghetti into his mouth. We are in the cafeteria, and the chattering of the students clouds our whispers.
"Daniel is his best friend; I'm sure he'll know why he isn't around," I tell her.
She hisses, still eating.
"Say something," I whine.
She swallows and glances at him. This time, their eyes lock, and his eyes grow cold instantly. He holds her stare until she hisses and looks away.
"I don't like that boy at all," she snaps. "God help me; this feeling is turning into hatred."
"I still don't understand your problem with him," I say and pick a potato chip from her plate.
She smacks my hand. "If you're hungry, go eat."
"I don't think I can eat anything," I reply.
"But you just took a potato chip from my plate. Isn't that food?"
"I haven't eaten it yet."
I wave the chip in the air. "It was too tempting."
"Why aren't you eating anything?" Anna asks.
"The thoughts of Daniel are the only thing on my mind," I say, dropping the chip on her plate. "I want to see his face, apologize to him, and see him smile excitedly when I present tickets to a great tech conference for his robotics club—twenty-two people in total."
My uncle was shocked this morning when I called him, begging for the tickets. I got them at a discounted price using a significant portion of my savings, but surprisingly, I don't mind. Instead, I look forward to seeing his smile. He deserves happiness.
My mood sours, my eyes wandering around the cafeteria. I glance at Boma and stand up.
"I need to ask him something."
I sprint to his side and plop down in a chair.
"Hey!" I say.
He raises a bushy eyebrow at me.
"Of course, you are," I reply.
"He rubs his hands together and winks.
"'So, why the sudden visit? Do you miss Daniel already?'"
I freeze, unsure how to respond.
"You do miss him," Boma says, chuckling.
The corner of my lips twitch, and I clench my hands. Daniel hasn't updated Boma on my misdeeds. Guilt crawls up my spine, and my head drops.
